Pole Material Properties

Unread postby AeroVault » Tue Feb 08, 2005 9:12 pm

I found the thread for the modulus of poles, but does anyone know the other properties of carbon fiber? Specifically, compressive strength, flexural strength, or hardness?

When it comes to carbon most that is used in poles is the same modulas. the key is the strain to failure %
We strive for 1.8% in a T620-700 material Most others have played with T-300 weave which is a less percentage 1.3-1.4% in the toe (TOWE) but more % about 1.7% in the weave.
This means how far it can stretch before an 1" square patch will fail.
To find anything more than this on poles would be venturing into proprietory info and would be unpublished or not available.
We do not use the carbon to make the poles come back faster, timing is the key to proper vaulting. so we only use carbon to lighten the pole.

no, carbons do come back faster, but that's not their original intention. that's not why they made carbon poles. they only made carbons to make the poles lighter. the fast come back is only a side affect of using carbon

It is all how you set your patterns as to if the pole will bend over or return fast.

We do not allow the carbon to cause the pole to return fast. That is what the double pendulun is for.

The double pendulum is the joining of the swing of the vaulter and the pole swing meeting at the same time providing upward thrust from the swing and the stored energy of the pole.

If the vaulter is moving smoothly up the pole storing energy and moving upward simultaneously while the pole moves smoothly upward as it bends and recoils.
The two peaking at the same time is the result of the double pendulum.

Far too many vaulters bend (crush) the pole then ride it up in a ball and explode to get a push off. They are the ones who try to have a pole that comes back very quick. Which complicates the style later as they move to stiffer and stiffer poles?

We believe that a pole that returns faster than the double pendulum consummates
Will return to vertical prematurely and require the vaulter to pull and turn lifting the hips and coming down on the bar.
Yes this kind of reaction on a pole can throw you higher in the air but clearing the bar is more than height it is also penetration over the bar.

ANY One wish to add to this I will step off the soap box to allow a different explanation.?
