On how she feels as an Olympic Champion

"It means a lot. It was my goal of my career. If you asked me what would I prefer, the Olympic gold medal or the world record, it would be the Olympic gold medal. The Olympic Games is every four years and I don't know if I will be still competing on 2008, maybe yes I will, maybe not. But you can break the world record whenever you like"

On what she was thinking after her two failed attempts at 4.80

"I was very unhappy, dissatisfied with myself. There are moments in your life that you say there is nothing you can do. And then you think of all you have suffered to get to the gold medal. When you are the favorite and you have achieved what I have, you are not satisfied with the silver or the bronze. I am not boastful, but I'm not used to losing. For me it's all or nothing".

On what she is saying to herself before every attempt

"It's something I cannot say, I want to keep it to myself. With so many cameras near our faces we have no privacy at all"

On what she will buy with the bonuses she gets for the world records she achieved this year

"A yacht. I'd really like to buy a car too. But I don't have the money yet, so I don't really know".

On how she feels compared with Sydney when she didn't qualify to the final

"I was very young, without any experience. I competed twice and then I went to Sydney for the Olympic Games. It was difficult, I didn't even have my coach, he arrived when I had finished"

I wish NBC would have shown more jumps what do you expect? The first world record broken in track and field at the Olympics, women vaulting over 16ft, and they mention it like it's no big deal.

Isinbayeva set a new world record after grabbing gold
Yelena Isinbayeva saw off her fellow Russian Svetlana Feofanova to clinch a dramatic women's pole vault gold.
Isinbayeva, the world record holder going into the Games, was one jump from elimination before clearing 4.85m.

Feofanova had to clear 4.90m to stay with her rival, but was nowhere near and had to settle for silver on 4.75. Poland's Anna Rogowska took bronze.

Isinbayeva, her title secure, then raised the bar to 4.91m to try to beat her own world record - and succeeded.


It was the 22-year-old's seventh world record this year, yet she had been in tears on the verge of catastrophe only minutes earlier.

Isinbayeva secured her title after taking a breathtaking gamble when in bronze position.

Having failed at both 4.70 and 4.75, she put the bar up to 4.80m and sailed well clear, earning a huge cheer from the crowd in the Olympic stadium.

She then cleared 4.85 before, with tears in her eyes, moving on to break her own world record by 1cm.

It was the first athletics world record to be broken in Athens.

Feofanova was so impressed that the pair, who have publicly admitted they do not get on, exchanged friendly words and smiles.
