hey. i have been injured for a while and i will be getting cleared to run pretty soon they think. i was wondering if anybody had any good running workouts. i know that there has been like tons of posts like this because i looked them up. but the thing is. i will not be able to pole vault for a while. so it will be strictly running and the gym for a yr to a yr and a half. so ... how can i use all this time to my advantage? like so that i can come back stronger and faster than i left. so that it wont be as hard to get back into the swing of things after more than 2 yrs of no vaulting. anything in particular that would be helpful?
thanks!

Have you been working out before getting cleared to practice or just starting now? And are you limited to running but no jumping movements?
You should find out what your doctor limits you on certain excersice movements.
But if you have acess to a pool, you might want to do acqua-jogging to work back the knees to avoid any stress/re-injuries to your legs. Doing 50-100 yrd sprints on the grassy area can do the same kind of workouts too. You can also practice on knee drives & high knee step sprints to help work out the legs.
You might be able to use a pole on sprints to get a feel for vaulting and perhaps use a sliding box to represent a vault pit to practice on planting poles. Just make sure the doctor says its ok to practice these drills before doing so.

Where do all the old catapoles go....? Ask Jan.
it wasnt my legs. it was a series of head injuries. so i should be fine with pretty much any running. or anything like that. as long as theres no chance of a 5th concussion lol. but i havent been able to work out in about 6 months. like no activities at all. so i prob want to take it slow. but i dont even know where to start since i have so much time to work up to where i want to get to. like im used to having like not enough time because of track season lol.

Ok, you didn't mention your specific injury but you def should wear a helmet during vaulting excercises. Working on sets of 10: short sprints, high step runs, leg springs (jogging while driving knees in the air), lunges on the grass would be a decent start. Try to increase your speed towards the drills so you can increase heart rate, flexibility and endurance.
You can also work on those vaulting drills without actually jumping to work on your planting, run-through steps and runway speed when you actually start vaulting. If you do any weigh training, maybe bubkas/pullups, situps/crunches/dips, some free weights on arms & legs.
I notice Jan has a nice training log you might want to check out for workouts: http://www.skyjumpers.com/pages/training.htm. I'm pretty sure others know a few other sites & tips to help you back into form. good luck.

Nah, i'm advocating the helmet use myself since ennairb sounds like they are recovering from serious head injuries. PVSCB offers certification to those who want to coach/supervise pv training/events but they do talk much about taking safety precautions.

yea i never knew that so much could happen from just hitting your head the wrong way. id definitely be in favor of trying a helmet when i can vault in a yr or so - wouldnt want to do this over again.

I know. I had several HS competitors who had same mishaps and they were luck in not being seriously injured. Toby Stevenson uses a helmet and he hasn't dealt with such issues. He decided to wear it because of his parents request.
Besides, helmets like his have improved where you don't have to worry about bulky caps on your head while trying to concentrate on vaults. It's also good for lite practices such as using sliding box drills & etc.
