17 Year old female, vaulting for 5 years. Has cleared 11'6" in the past was close to 12', 11' regularly. This year can't get over 10'6" consistently this year. She's about the same size she was last year.

In this practice, we were working on keeping her swing leg long

https://youtu.be/VeAGm-IZZ0M
https://youtu.be/an-ebEsku4U
https://youtu.be/zdAqrp7bFJo (bungee)
Step is at 9' pretty consistenly, which is where she should be when you check it with the pole in the box. 7 lefts on the full runs. The pole in all the videos is a 12'-4" #145, she holds at 12'4"
Is she is doing something funny with her top hand on the plant, kind of unfurling it instead of driving it up?
I think she is leaning back for some reason on the take off, over striding maybe? Or should her takeoff be farther back at ~ 9'6"?
I think her jump looks different with bar/bungee vs. no bar. From her head position, it looks like she is looking at the bar and it makes her posture all wrong and gets worse as the bar gets higher.
Any suggestion on fixing the swing leg tucking issue?
She's getting a bit demoralized, and I am by no means an experienced coach, so any help you could give would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Vaulter Regression
Looks to me that she is a bit late on her plant which is causing her to stride out on her last step. Work with her off the runway on getting her plant up on the second to last left step.
As for the swing, high bar or rings is the only way fix that.
Good luck.

Re: Vaulter Regression
hi, i am just curious, when she cleared 11 6 was she on the pole she was on for the videos? the reason i ask is because for me personally, i cleared 14ft last spring on a 14 160. i really didn't change much over the summer and all of sudden i bend the crap out of the 14 160 from a short run. Sometimes when u get conftrerable on a pole it will get soft without having to change anything. I am just finding this out myself that i need a bigger pole even though my old pole was stiff for me before. Try to give her a bigger pole to jump on and if u really can't find anything make her go from 6 or 5 left rather than 7, u might find that the pole doesn't move as slow.
Your only as good as your last jump.

Re: Vaulter Regression
Thanks vcpvcoach, adjusting her plant made the vault a lot more effortless, now she's working on the rings as suggested. Of course now she's blowing through the pole way into the back of the pit
:-)
asaleh, it's the same pole as last year, we are going to work on moving up to a 12'-4" 155 and then onto a 13' 145.

Re: Vaulter Regression
Morning,
She has a bunch of things going on that look great, a few that could be better.
You say she is leaning back at take off, looks to me like as she initiates the pole drop 3/4 steps out, she holds it and maintains the pole tip around head level for a step. The whole body is balanced as she runs, so if the pole tip is being help up, this means that there has to be a counter balancing act in the low back/arms/legs keeping the pole tip from dropping. This means she has tensed up and leaning backwards to hold the pole up to be balanced. We really want her to be active with the hands, to coninue the pole to drop. As the pole drop happens we want to get the pole tip lower we need to increase the cadence of the run to keep the chest torso in a forward position to get rid of the breaking action/leaning backward. Being able to be fluid with the hands and increase the running cadence through take off allows for better step and decrease in leaning backwards at take off...
Coaching cues could be,
1 - Chase the pole tip and be active with the hands run
2 - Get the pole tip lower on 2... jump over the pole tip (two lefts out, I like to see the pole tip at eye level so the vaulter can see down the pole - the pole will be parellel and activly moving so the weight of the pole is "weightless")
3 - once we come over the mid - the last 3,2,1 left steps need to increase in cadence to get the step/chest to where it needs to be.
Looks to me like she swing around the pole very quick and she gets her quads on the pole - problem is shes going through the pole and its too small and shes too big to thower her up there... I would say go up a stick however I question her ability in strength to handle more pole and keep the hands moving to drop on to the shoulders. If it were me coaching I would drop her grip a touch to increase the pole speed and stiffen up the pole and get her to come right out the top... If shes an x-gymnast the coaching cue could be - the shoulder placement drop similar similar to a highbar, free hip circle....
Looks like youre doing a good job coach - keep up the good work
hope that helps
cheers

Re: Vaulter Regression
I say to my vaulters, if it feels difficult during your vault, something is wrong. It should feel effortless when done correctly.
Good luck.
