Renaud Lavillenie 6.08m, #2 vaulter all-time

It's not at his home pole vault...
The journalist asked him "I heard you train with rubber at 6.20 or 6.25m high."
Renaud answered "Yes... just to get used to jump those heights [...] Actually, my best jump during training remains at 5.90 m."
(FYI : Renaud also jumped a rubber with clearance at 5.90 during warming-up at Rouen's meeting before jumping 6.04 m during the competition 10 days ago... )

Technically it is hard to imagine a vaulter more different from Bubka. I would like to know what all the advocates of the Bubka/Petrov model will say if and when Lavillenie breaks Bubka's Record. I imagine they will find ways to rationalize that Lavillenie's technique actually fits the B/P model.

I think they already sadly wrote what you think about this 6.08 and the supposed "unfair technique" of Renaud... (sorry about you, KirkB, you're some of the one I normally agree the most on this forum, reading you along your posts...)

Have you noticed that the higher he vaults (these past few years) the smoother he swings (less of a pause as the pole rolls forwards)?
Yes, this is a plug for the Petrov Model. Remember the backyard vaults he did where there was no discernible pause at all?

But I didn't call this "unfair technique" - I don't know who you're quoting for that one, Wan. And I don't know why you think that what I wrote is "sad". I'm actually quite happy and quite impressed with Lavillenie's recent PRs!

Nice to hear from you again, David. I would love to hear your comparison of Bubka to Lavillenie, or your comparison of Lavillenie 4 years ago to today!

So if you don't think his technique has improved in the past 5 years (looking more and more like the Petrov Model), then how do you account for his PR progression? Faster? Stronger? What?

I gotta give kudos to Renaud for the enthusiam he brings to the sport. He jumps in lots of meets and more often than not he performs at a high level. It's refreshing to see and I hope it breeds more enthusiasm for out sport, and Track and Field in General

Just wondering where all those folk have gone who accused Bubka of being influential in having the rules modified to prevent other jumpers getting close to him!

I have not had a chance to analyse what Lavellenie is doing except to note briefly that he is certainly using the high pole carry and organised lowering of the pole that is characteristic of the P/B model and he seems to be taking off a heck of a long way out - --something that more US vaulters did not want to consider just a few years ago - an attitude which I suspect Petrov/Bubka helped to change.

Note that a good analysis, especially if it is to be comparative, takes time and at the moment I am dealing with some more pressing matters in my life.
