What do you think about in meets?

A forum to discuss overall training techniques, nutrition, injuries, etc. Discussion of actual pole vault technique should go in the Technique forum.

Unread postby KYLE ELLIS » Wed Mar 17, 2004 9:23 pm

What do you guys think about at a meet? I usually relax out of the back and try to hit it hard at the end and stay down good. I was wondering what you guys think of cause my teamate doesnt think at all when he jumps...

I try to think of what i need to focus on most, and then try to not think at all on the runway. thinking gives time to get nervous, worry about doin stuff wrong, etc.. like the nike ad.. JUST DO IT ;)
What have you done today to get better?

Even while I'm at the back of the runway, I think about that moment of impact, and I try to see a really explosive jump off the ground with my arms as high as I can reach, and then the rest just sort of happens.

I believe that concentrating on an explosive takeoff in someway is a must!

There usually isn't too much competition at most of my meets, so I just got into the habit of thinking of any meet like a limited practice. It kind of works out too becuase when I go to big meets, I don't have to worry about suddenly becoming a headcase. There's not too much that you can change about your vault during a meet anyway, so I just think about what I have been working on in practice. Then I just let it happen- it seems to work out alright.

i just get as fired up as i can and then just let things happen. I just need to feel like i'm completely insane and then things usually fall into place.

I think too much about clearing a height, and end up missing it :(

before my jump I visualize and 'feel' the jump before i take it. Once I start my approach, my mind pretty much blanks out
