i have found the key is just moderation. I typically eat a small breakfast, a sandwhich and a salad around 11. Something light around 4 after i workout, and then a solid dinner around 7 or 8. Wheat bread, wheat pasta etc is healthier. I try to keep fat intakes down, but dont forget some fat intake is necessary. I live on water, skim milk and juices, no soda, and another big one is no caffeine. I found the first week was kind of rough, but after that i just felt so much healthier. Another big one is keeping alchohol consumption down, which sux, but its soooo bad for you. Anyway, this is my general plan, but every now and then you gotta break rules, just dont make a habbit out of eating bad.

also i take a multivitamen in the morning, and because of recent events, a calcium supplement twice a day.

How I lost 50lbs in 12 months

Unread postby PVMASTER » Wed Mar 03, 2004 2:15 am

In reply to the diet issue it isn't really a question of diet or not. People go on and off diets, myself included. Eating properly has to become a lifestyle otherwise it is to easy to fall of the "Diet". I am a 43 year old Masters Pole Vaulter who just started jumping again this past summer after a 15 year layoff. January 16th of 2003 I started to get serious about changing my lifestyle both in exercise and eating. In 12 months I lost 50lbs! From 255lbs down to 205lbs. I am continuing to lose weight although at a little slower rate but my goal is 185lbs to 190lbs, college weight. Of course I am always asked lately "WOW, How did you lose so much weight?" Well I based alot of my eating habits around Bill Phillips "Body For Life" Program. But what I found that really worked for me is what I call my private school program. If you were attending a private school that requires you to wear a uniform, well Monday thru Friday when you get up in the morning you wouldn't even have to think about what you were going to wear to school. It would be the same old uniform. Well I kinda took that attitude with my eating because I used to spend so much time and energy trying to figure out what I could eat, what I couldn't eat, how much of it etc, that eventually I would just go back to the same old eating habits. Now I start my day out with a huge Protein shake/smoothy(protein powder/shake mix, diet yogurt, frozen fruit, skim milk, ice cubes) and then throughout the day, I snack on stuff like cottage cheese, diet yogurt, protein/energy bar, another shake or piece of chicken etc. The key is to eat every 2-3 hours. Then for dinner I have a huge salad with either a diced chicken breast on it or some cooked shrimp with a nice dressing that I like. Try to avoid a really fatty dressing. I also avoid sugars like the plague. Very hard for me since I have a sweet tooth. And lastly I try not to eat anything 2 hours before I go to bed. Most peoples reaction to this when I tell them is that "I couldn't do that!" I respond with, "If you want it bad enough you sure can!" ( since the end of last summer my vault has improved from 3.85m to 4.27m). The nice thing about this program for me is that it has taken out all the stress of meal planning because I have found something that worked for me and I have just stuck to it. Also when holidays come around, special occasions, birthdays, dinner guests etc or even when I am on the road to track meets I don't have to beat myself up for induldging abit in the "regular foods". Sure over the holidays I gained a few pounds back but as soon as they were over I was back on my program and the few pounds I gained were off within a few days. The biggest key to this program is to eat 5-6 times a day and that way your metabolism won't go into storage mode but will continue to burn effeciently. I am not saying that this program is for everyone but it sure has worked for me. :)

sounds like a great program thats not too specific but gets the job done. my only advice to anyone lookin to lose weight would be to eat healthy, like so many people always mention, (i think the above post provides a good starting point or idea on eating healthy) as well as exercising. i think aerobic exercise is vital to living healthy, and often times more weight will be lost when changing aerobic exercie (i.e. a few months running, then a few months swimming, then biking, etc.)
