USATF no longer insuring home based facilities

Unread postby PVcuz » Fri Mar 22, 2013 6:27 am

I recently received this email (attachment is pasted below):

After much consideration and discussion between USATF, our Legal Counsel and Insurance Broker, we are no longer able to take on the additional liability that a home-based facility requires.
Please see USATF’s statement regarding this change. I have attached it for your convenience.
Note that there are some carriers listed in the statement that may be able to provide you with coverage.
Thank you for your inquiry. We appreciate your continued support of USATF.

USA Track & Field (USATF) does not sanction and insure home-based practice facilities under its General Liability Insurance Program offered for club practices. This decision has been made due to the increased liability of insuring such facilities and an inability for USATF to monitor and control the activities and equipment upkeep at those facilities. It is necessary to ensure that USATF remain in a position to provide insurance coverage to its members and, therefore, cannot afford to take any risks that might jeopardize its ability to provide such coverage.

While USATF has made some exceptions to this policy in the past, it does not intend to do so going forward. USATF remains sensitive to this issue. Accordingly, should a homeowners’ or other policy of a club owner not cover the activities of a home-based facility, USATF has worked with its insurance broker to provide the following list of possible insurance carriers who may be willing to cover a home-based practice facility (keeping in mind that each home-based facility situation is unique). Those insurance carriers are as follows:

www.fdean.com
www.kandkinsurance.com
www.phly.com

We appreciate your understanding.

I'm under the impression that several PV clubs in the USA are home based facilities. What is everyone doing about this?

wow, what a bummer. I wonder about something like New York's Flying Circus Pole Vault Club's facility? It's not "home-based" but it's not a school.

This will be a huge problem for a local coach and will prevent the continuation of their home based club as they cannot afford to purchase insurance from a private company and cannot risk athletes pole vaulting at his home with no protection, regardless that they have never had an accident or injury in 7 years.
