5/3/12 Meet + 5/5/12 Practice

At the meet, I managed to get a hold of a 14' 165 UCS pole gripping at 13'. Standards are at 65.

13'4" (best attempt): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8njU__Ns ... e=youtu.be

Also, today at practice, I worked on just getting consistent vaults at a 14' bungee, with a 14' 160 pole gripping at 13', it looks like it's coming together for the postseason!

Here are videos from the last meet.

11'8" (first attempt using a 14' 160 pole holding at 13')

13'2" NEW PR (first attempt using 14' 165 pole holding at 13')

13'8" (third attempt using 14' 165 holding at 13')_

It looks to me that on some of the jumps, I get down pretty vertical but at the top instead of shooting up, my hips shoot towards the bar. Any tips on that? I also just borrowed a 14' 170 pole from a neighbor school so if I need to at the next meet I will move up to that.

To answer your question: You need to allow the shoulders open up as you cover the pole. To cover the pole completely and get upside down, after take off, your feet swing to your hands, you press the hips in while pushing the feet up, and while this is happening you want to allow your shoulders to open up. Some people call this "dropping back into the shoulders".

Think of a dead lift in weight lifting. First, the shoulders are in front of the chest, but once you bring the weight up, you open or roll your shoulders back and now the chest is foremost with the shoulders behind.

Get on a high bar and do some legit Bubkas. You can do it! Keep up the good work and congratulations on the PR!!!!

Thanks! "dropping the shoulders" will definitely be one of my cues that I keep on thinking about at my next meet!! Thanks for the advice and tomorrow at practice, I'll work on it!

Last vaulting practice before sectionals this Saturday! It went really great! Started off on the 14' 160 holding at 13'1" with the bungee at 14'-14'6". Was landing really deep and tried to vault on my competition "big" pole 14' 165 but couldn't handle that during today's practice. Tried to focus on"dropping my shoulders" and staying agressive at my takeoff. Things seem to be coming together and I'm excited for this post season to come!!

First jump is at 14', and the rest of the jumps are at 14'6" (all from 7 lefts at 86', standards all the way back)

It looks like I need to drop my shoulders and shoot up even more, but it improved slightly this meet. Will work on it this week at practice!

Congratulations on the PR! Continue to drop back into the shoulders. Remember, Bubka said it was always his intention to be completely upside down (or even a little past vertical) while the pole is still bent.

Get on a high bar two days this week and do some more Bubkas, and this time get your body past vertical. This is only possible if you are opening the shoulders up completely. Do them until opening the shoulders feels like the natural thing to do. Good luck!

5/25/12 California NCS Meet of Champions (State Qualifier)

Last meet of the season unless I get top 4. Was mentally, physically, emotionally, and technically ready for a 14' jump today. But in a 5 alive rotation, while 4th seeds through 8th seeds were up, the 20% chance of rain came down with the might of 100 gods, and the rain was as bad as i had ever jumped in..

cleared 12'6", 13' first attempts (13' was a HUGE jump for me, felt really great, way over, and was ready to hit 13'6" and 14')

Rain came during 13'6" attempts, hip height was over, but lack of speed and penetration left me shallow. Standards were at 70, 70 and then 60 but I missed all three on the way down.

I feel like I had a great season, even though I ended it on a bad note.. But I am excited for the next 4 years of vaulting at Emory University.

And here is the end to "Andy Kim's Senior Season Log"
