If anyone's curious about the nature of the Stockholm competition (detailed results), I had the good fortune of being able to attend, so allow me to describe some details.

Rain moved the PV indoors and anyone who could make their way to the facility in time could just walk in and enjoy. Must have been about 30 spectators total (including a group of 20 made up of vault coaches/family members + some of the women who had vaulted the day before), with very little cheering.

Gibilisco blew through on his first attempt at 5.20, hitting the bar on the way up. Then he got super vertical (maybe 60-70 cm clearance) on his last two attempts, albeit too early, hitting the bar on the way down both times--NH.

Lavillenie (taped ankle) looked awesome during the warm-up, taking his final practice vault about an hour before his make at 5.50, which he sailed over by a ton. Unfortunately, he didn't take his next jump until about 40 minutes or so later, bailing on his first try at 5.72. It looked like he had the standards back at 80 on his two subsequent misses at the same height, hitting the bar on the way up both times (final attempt on a heavier pole). Too bad, since he looked good for 5.90+ on the day. He runup was 18 steps--don't know if he goes longer outdoors.

Malte Mohr was interesting to watch--what a nice, long swing, and he was using a runup of only 14 steps!

Maxym Mazuryk only got his pole to about 70% of vertical on his second--and final--attempt at 5.84. He was seriously under and might have just switched to a stiffer pole, at least it looked like it. He wasn't going to make the pit, but hesitated when contemplating how to land so as to incur the least damage. In the end, he held on too long to the pole with both hands, breaking his fall to the runway only briefly with his feet, side, and shoulder, before smacking his head on the ground. Ouch! He's one tough cookie, as he only asked for ice for his road rashed shoulder.

My son and I had started the first bout of rhythmic clapping of the day on this very jump--oh well, so much for trying get some cheering going. Mazuryk ended up winning, so let's hope he's OK and was able to enjoy the victory once the pain wore off.

To see world-class vaulters that close up and without a lot of fans and cheering sure was interesting. The way it all played out sure made it the strangest PV competition I've ever seen!

Athletics: Change of venue does Lewis no favours

STEVE Lewis had to take a 35-minute taxi ride away from a packed stadium after heavy rain made it too dangerous for outdoor pole vaulting at the European Team Championships yesterday.

The 25-year-old, from Light Oaks, had expected to challenge for the top honour in front of a full house in Stockholm, Sweden.

Instead, Lewis finished seventh jumping in an empty indoor venue on the outskirts of the city in the last event of the competition.

The former Newcastle College student made it past 5.20m at the third attempt and cleared 5.40m at the first, but failed to conquer 5.60m.

Ukranian Maksym Mazuryk jumped a season's best 5.72m to take gold, ahead of Malte Mohr, from Germany, who also cleared the same height.

Lewis said: "I was out watching the women's pole vault on Saturday and the stadium looked amazing, like a castle, and I couldn't wait to get out there.

"But then the rain came down on Sunday and we were slipping all over the place. We knew we couldn't carry on without worrying someone would get hurt.

"Hats off to the guys for eventually finding us somewhere to jump, but after such a long day it was just a case of who had most left in the tank."

Lewis will now focus on preparing for the World Championships, in South Korea, at the end of August.

"The result could have been better, but I'll just have to dust myself off and start the hard training all over again," he added.

About Lavillenie, he reports on his website that it was a long and frustrating day.

He did his first warm up at 13:30, and his last jump at 19:30

He just says that he cleared 5,50 on his first attempt, that he was "half sleeping" on hist first attempt at 5,72, the pole was too loose on his second attempt, he tooked a stiffer pole for the 3rd attempt, and in fact, this pole was as loose as the other!

He says he has no excuses for such a bad showing, he was in good shape, and he hopes to be better on Friday at the Nancy meeting.
