Usually when a pole breaks because of a ding, it breaks in one place (two pieces). When a pole breaks in two or more places (three+ pieces) it's from being overbent/overloaded/whatever you want to call it.

When I was in Germany last spring, the German biomechanists had put together some data on the top vaulters (including Hooker and Lavillenie) and I believe that they found Lavillenie bent the pole quite a bit more than most other elites. Though my memory could be faulty...

really? it took german biomechanists studying data to see he bent the pole more than others? im not impressed by their work. I believe any untrained circus monkey can see that! haha. handles aren't supposed to move down anywhere near that much either. When you watch most elites jump, even under big bends the handle continues to rise.

now obviously this isn't hurting his vaulting so maybe theres something to it, but seems from all coaches models, the idea is to keep moving everything up all the time, so why would a pole drop/gainer be beneficial? anywayyyy. hes jumping way higher than me so ill shut up. just my thoughts.

He is 5'9 153 pounds jumping on huge pole (5.10/14.6) very impressive, jumped 6.01 at 23. Decamouse very nice frame by frame, but in my opinion still could of been a ding or maybe you are right, he just blew the pole up.I like to think poles do not break, unless they have suffered some type of damage through being dinged, dropped or stepped on. He has serious intestinal fortitude gripping 16'8" on a pole 40-50 pounds over his weight. The French have had some excellent jumpers over the years, Vigneron, Quinon, Galfione and Collett. Keep those frame by frames coming they are great.

At the Berlin World Championships only the three Frenchmen bent the pole by more than 30% (shortening of the chord, measurements by biomechanics research group).
Lavillenie 37%, Dossevi 36%, Mesnil 33% ... Hooker 25-27% ...

Small differences in bent are not that easily to observe as the pole also bends sideways.

As H. Cingon pointed out, Renaud who is not very tall only can achieve big heights by bending the pole a lot.

Also, all three jump on Spirits. Hooker would not be able to achieve this much bend without his carbon's blowing up all the time.
