Re: Class of 2010 College Signings

College signing: Jessie Vardas
Comments
August 19, 2010
•School: University of Wisconsin (Madison); NCAA Division I
•Sport: Women's track
Vardas
•Intended major: Possibly sports medicine
•Background: The 2010 Hinsdale Central graduate was the first multiple all-state pole vaulter in girls track program history. In May, she helped the Red Devils win their first team state title by clearing a career-best 11 feet, 6 inches to tie for third at the IHSA Class 3A state meet, after finishing eighth (11-0) in 2009. She also competed in diving and gymnastics at Hinsdale Central.
•Wisconsin update: The Badgers finished fifth at the indoor Big Ten Conference Championships, and third outdoors (their highest finish since taking third in 2000), and qualified 14 athletes for the NCAA Championships. Fourth-year assistant coach Nate Davis works with pole vaulters, jumpers, multi-event athletes and sprint hurdlers. He was named U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's Great Lakes Regional Assistant Coach of the Year for the 2010 indoor season after two athletes he oversaw earned Big Ten titles and All-America honors. Jim Stintzi is entering his seventh season as head coach.
•On being recruited: "I contacted the coach and he responded because he liked the pole vault video I sent him," Vardas said. "I've always wanted to go to Wisconsin ever since I was a young kid. I visited officially first semester of my senior year, but I had been to Wisconsin unofficially a few times before that."
•On choosing Wisconsin: "The campus is gorgeous and the academics are challenging. Plus, the atmosphere there is really cool. I like Coach Davis' approach regarding technique, and I really like him. The kids on the team also seem really nice. The fact that Coach Davis and I have both watched every episode of 'South Park' also gives us a common bond."
•On being a Division I athlete: "I wasn't sure if I wanted to do D-I, D-III or no track at all. As I visited different schools, I realized that D-I was the right choice for me since I really liked the Wisconsin program. (Regarding the recruiting process), don't wait for coaches to contact you. If there is a school you really like, then contact that coach and keep in touch with your progress."
•College goals: "I want to do well in school, and I want to jump 12-6 by the end of my freshman year."

Wharton High School product London Enos, The Tampa Tribune's Girls Track Athlete of the Year last season after winning her second straight state title in the pole vault, has signed a scholarship with the University of Central Florida, Wharton track and cross country coach Wes Newton said Thursday.
Enos is the third track athlete to sign with the Knights in recent years, following Wildcats middle distance standouts Kathia and Katrina Skinner. But since the twins recently left UCF's track and cross country programs following some mixed performances, Newton says he holds some reservations about Enos competing there.
"London still has a tremendous amount of potential as a college athlete and it (UCF) could turn out to be the best thing for her," Newton said. "I just hope she can get the coaching at UCF she needs to take it to that next level."
Enos was Hillsborough County's lone female to win a state track and field title last season, making it two straight gold medals in the state pole vault finals. She has also marked the 10th consecutive year a Wharton athlete has won the Tribune's Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year award.

Chandler will vault for Yale

Paul Chandler is the best pole vaulter in the state and ranks among the top pole vaulters nationally. A senior captain for the Staples boys track and field indoor and outdoor track teams, he proved this statement to be true by winning the State Open title in the pole vault by leaping 14-fett, won Class LL (14-0) and finished fifth at the National Indoor Track championships (14-10,5), which broke a school record and earned him All-American honors.
"I was extremely thrilled to earn All-American," Chandler said. "I never thought it was possible when I first did track as a freshman."
Although he won at Class LL and State Open, he wasn't 100 percent pleased with his performance.
"I worked hard at States [Class LL] and State Open, but I didn't do as well there as I'd hoped," Chandler admitted. "I resolved to work hard between Eastern Regionals and Nationals and it helped me do well at Nationals."
He played a major role in Staples taking second at FCIACs, fifth at Class LL and third at State Open and was awarded the Block S Team MVP award.
"Paul is very focused, obviously very talented and is a very hard worker," Wreckers Coach Laddie Lawrence said. "When you put it all together, he's the best pole vaulter in our program's history."
When the season began, his stellar ending looked like a pipe dream because he was off to a slow start. He was determined to change that and he successfully steered himself in the direction towards the winner's circle.
"At the beginning of the year, I struggled a bit because [for the most part], I didn't pole vault for six months," Chandler said. "Running helped me get in shape and by the end of the year, I was doing my best."
This winter, he began doing the long jump and finished fifth in it at FCIACs. Although he qualified for the long jump in Class LL, he didn't compete in it because he wanted to solely focus on the pole vault. During outdoor track, he does the triple jump and does well in it, but similar to the long jump, it takes a back seat to the pole vault.
Adjusting to the long jump wasn't easy but he was able to do it.
"The training I did with my pole vault, my speed, dexterity and running ability, helped me," Chandler said. "In the first meet, I didn't do well in the long jump, but in the second meet, I jumped 19-1 and qualified for States."
He hopes to improve in the triple jump and contribute a few points in it.
"I have to continue to work on my jumping ability," Chandler. "I don't have high aspirations in it."
During his freshman year, he tried sprinting, distance events and jumping during the indoor season. Once he found his niche in the pole vault, he devoted his energies towards fine tuning his skills in it.
"I tried different events to see what I'm good at it and I liked the pole vault because the results are measurable," Chandler said. "The pole vault is a combination of sprinting, jumping and gymnastics and I'm able to combine all the things I'm interested in."
When he first signed up for indoor track, his plan was to use it to get into shape for lacrosse and football. After one season of track, he dropped lacrosse and did outdoor track.
Sophomore year, he took second in the pole vault in Class L indoor track and placed third in Class L in it in outdoor track.
"I was consistent and it wasn't a surprise to break out as a state contender," Chandler said. "It set the stage for vaulting for the next few years."
Following his sophomore year, he started to attend pole vaulting camps and clinics. That summer, he attended clinics in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania. He didn't have much time for clinics during the summer after junior year because he was busy with recruiting trips but managed to go for a week to a clinic in North Carolina.
Before junior year, he quit football to focus on track. He joined the cross-country team that year and although he didn't participate in a race, he was still able to work out and get in shape for track.
This spring, he's setting lofty but reachable goals for himself.
"With the right training, I hope to do the same thing [win Class LL and State Open and add a New England championship title [no pole vaulting during the indoor season at New Englands]," Chandler said. "I'll take it one step at a time. I'll train for it and I hope to compete at a high level."
Leadership is a strength of his as he is a track captain for both indoor and outdoor. For the most part, he leads by example through his work ethic.
"Being captain was a good experience for me," Chandler said. "I enjoyed having some control over the track team, coordinating meets and collaborating with my other captains and coaches. It was a lot of fun and I worked to set a good example."
He is the indoor track team's scholar-athlete to the Staples Scholar-Athlete banquet. Overall, he took five AP courses, three this year.
"It feels great to represent the team at the Scholar-Athlete banquet," Chandler said. "I work hard in school as well as on the track. I know how important it is to do well in school and I find it easy to balance my schoolwork with track during the season because it's [your routine] regimented when you have a schedule and I have no trouble balancing everything."
Next year, he'll pole vault for Yale University. He knows he'll have to increase his distances in order to thrive at Yale.
"There are great expectations at a Division I program," Chandler said. "Yale has great coaches and great facilities to work out at. Having a regimented program helps and I hope to have an Ivy League championship and earn All-American. I'll work hard the next four years and we'll see."
Lawrence said, "He will do well at Yale. "Guys who didn't jump as high as Paul jumped 18-feet in college."

Bass will compete for Bowdoin
Eliot Schickler
Published: 05:27 p.m., Thursday, September 16, 2010
Eliot Bass epitomizes the meaning of being multi-faceted. A graduate of Staples in June, he sparkled for its indoor and outdoor track teams in many events -- especially in the pole vault, and will be competing for Bowdoin College this year.
"I'm pretty much interested in every event and one day, I picked up the shot put to try it," Bass said. "I like being challenged by my events. I like the decathlon so much because I can do everything. Every event has a fun aspect. Vaulting is like gymnastics because you can turn upside down in the air. In the shot put, I can yell and go crazy and running is how much you can put into it while competing with your opponent. In other events, you wait your turn but in running, you race next to your opponent."
This spring, he finished fifth in the CIAC decathlon with 5,418 points.
"I worked on the events I wasn't sure about because they weren't my strengths," Bass said. "In the end, I was able to do well in them."
Bass played a major role in Staples finishing near the top of the FCIAC and Class LL standings.
"He was a very, very valuable member of the track teams and is capable of doing many events," Wreckers Coach Laddie Lawrence said.
The pole vault was his best event and it started freshman year when Lawrence inserted Bass in pole vaulting and sprinting events. Since then, he's taken off as a pole vaulter.
"There's a strong pole vaulting community within Staples track," Bass said. "[Assistant Coach] Andrew [Lawrence, the coach's son] is a great pole vaulting coach and there are a lot of great pole vaulters in my class and we push each other to become better."
His ability to remain calm in the pole vault contributed to his success in it.
"The key is a lot of practice and when it comes to game time, you execute what you practice," Bass said. "You keep your mind clear and put all your energy and focus into it."
After the pole vault, the triple jump is his second best event. Similar to other events, picked it up because he wanted to diversify his talents and in the end, proved he was a natural in it.
"I kind of picked it up as a random thing to do and I qualified for States," he said. "The key is having leg strength and [Assistant Coach] Rob Steinmetz, who once had the Staples record in the triple jump and long jump, helped me a lot. Ben Rosa [Class '08] and Josh Henry [Class '09] helped teach me the way as well."
The javelin is his third best event and he originally picked it up because it was an event in the decathlon. At first, he didn't throw it well but that changed once he slowly but surely learned the proper method of throwing it.
"The key is to throw it as hard as you can," Bass said. "If you let it rip and throw it hard, it will come out nicely."
At 6-3 and 165 pounds, he possesses a lot of muscle, which he helped develop while doing crew in the fall. During track season, he was in the weight room almost every day, which also contributed to his increased physical strength.
Another event that came naturally for Bass was the long jump. He never did it until he tried it for the decathlon and learned the event by observing his peers. Possessing strong legs from throwing also helped.
"I watched the one before me and I just let it hang and jumped as far as I could," he said. "I had to run fast and hang in the air as much as possible."
Running isn't a problem for him. Bass sprinted for the Wreckers since freshman year and during the indoor season of his senior year, he was on the All-FCIAC 4x400 meter relay team and ran a 53.6 split. Lawrence inserted him in the 400-meter dash and 200-meter dash during his career.
"I just got strong legs and the program Laddie does is designed for the 400 meters, which is why Staples historically has strong runners," Bass said. "I race the best when I'm not thinking. When you don't realize how much pain you have and block everything out, your successful."
Running the 200 is different for him because it's more of an all-out sprint than the 400.
"You don't think about it and you just race it hard," Bass said. "You take it out for the first 100 at 90 percent and then finish at 100 percent."
Bass medaled in the shot put at FCIACs. Similar to some of his events, he began developing in it after wondering to the shot put pit to check it out after his pole vault workout. He decided to give it a try and saw he liked it and was good in it as well.
"My key to the shot put is getting loud and screaming out there," Bass admitted. "It pumps me up and gives me the energy I need."
Through his training, he became the top discus thrower on Staples with a personal best of 116-8.
"You have to let it rip and keep the centrifugal force going," he said.
Pigeonholing Bass is difficult because of his wide array of tastes.
"I'm kind of like everywhere because I want to try and do everything and I find out I'm good at everything," Bass said.
Growing up, he ran in the age group track meet. Once he got to Staples, he decided to try the pole vault and track.
"My friends told me to try the pole vault because it would be fun," Bass recalled. "My competitive side took over and I started to run and by sophomore and junior years, I was doing every event."
Academically, he excelled in the classroom and took AP courses. Economics is his favorite subject.
"Athletics give you a good structure with academics," Bass said. "You go to school, do your sport go home and do your homework."
At Bowdoin, he'll major in economics and he hopes to go into business. Bass will also compete for the Polar Bears, specializing in the pole vault and triple jump and will run in decathlons as well.
In order to excel for Bowdoin, he'll have to raise his game to the next level because the competition is tougher in college. And he's been working hard in this endeavor all summer.
"The Bowdoin program is strong and the coach has coached people to great heights at State Open," Bass said. "The facilities are great and the program is strong. I'll have to train every day and study film. I'll work hard to achieve my goals."
Lawrence is confident Bass will contribute to the Polar Beers.
"Bowdoin is a great fit for him and he'll do well there," Lawrence said. "Unless we have a good decathlete, it will take a few people to replace Eliot. We need to develop more pole vaulters, throwers and horizontal jumpers in order to do so."
The decathlon takes place more often in the outdoor than indoor season, thus he will be locked into only two events for a good part of the year. That's a challenge in itself for someone dynamic like Bass, who likes to get involved in everything.
"It will be an interesting especially in practice," Bass said. "They will have me on a stricter schedule, but for the decathlon, they will vary my training. I'll get the same exposure in smaller events while training for bigger events."
