Trying to get 12' for states NEED HELP please

Unread postby crazyasian31 » Sun May 09, 2010 10:16 am

Age: 18
Grade: senior
How long you have been jumping: 3rd season
What pole you are on (length and weight rating): 150 13'
How high you are gripping: 12'
What bar(s) you are attempting in the video: 10, 10'6, 11, 11'6
Standards at 20" in all videos
Hi everyone, I really want to clear 12 feet for my meet on wednesday but I need some help on my technique, maybe just some non-major adjustments that will help me get that extra foot. Here is the footage all all the vault starting from 10 up to 11'6( I opened at 8'6 jumped up to 9'6 and then went from there)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W7tfDGtymBY (the last jump in the video is a slo-mo of my 11', I dunno why I put it there, sorry haha)

Any tips, criticism would be greatly appreciated. I would really like to end with a 12' vault this year.
Also what height should I open at now that I have cleared 11?

Start at a height that you can ALWAYS clear, but don't start so low that you're tuckered out by the time the bar gets to 11-6 or 12-0. After you make your opening bar, it's not a bad strategy to pass the next one ... if you started quite low.

So if you think you're good for a dozen vaults (or maybe you're only good for half a dozen), then work backwards from there. Make sure you assume that a couple bars may take you 2-3 tries to clear. You want to be fully warmed up and at your peak form for the day when you get near your PR. It's better to be fully warmed up but a little tired than to be completely fresh but cold when you get near your PR.

Remember that your lower vaults give you more practice time over a bar in a competition, so don't pass up that opportunity by passing. Even if you're at "states" on Wednesday, I think this advice still applies ... right thru the summer if you're going to keep vaulting that long.

Okay, that makes sense. Thank you. And yeah it isn't really states, my school just calls it that. It's just a bunch of private school from around the State that can attend if they want to.

Is there any things in my vault that I can fix by Wednesday to get that extra 1' or 1'6?

I RECOMMNED you use the same pole, lower hand grip 1 fist length drive the BOX wiht a high plant and clear 12".
As you go up that pole is get softer, you may even weigh more than the pole a little?
If so move 1 1/2 fist down to stiffen up the pole for more thrust upward!
do not let your hand grip go up during the meet, you will overbend the pole!
you may need to move the stands up a little too.
Good Luck at the Meet!

Thanks for all the advice so far everyone.

I have a 155, 13'7 UCS spirit that I could go up to, Its definitely stiffer than the 13', but last meet I couldn't get enough penetration with it.

and I know a 1 foot increase by wednesday sounds kinda ridiculous, but my vault has so many errors in it, that I figure if i can fix one or two up a little bit I should be able to get that boost.
