Boys track and field: MD's Woepse injuries hamstring, MRI Monday
April 25th, 2010, 1:34 am · Post a Comment · posted by Jason Eichelberger, OC Varsity.com

Woepse is the national leader this season with a clearance of 17-6.
Mater Dei senior and national pole vault leader Michael Woepse suffered a left hamstring injury on his third attempt at 17 feet Saturday at the O.C.C. and had to be carried off the track.

In a phone interview Saturday evening, the defending state champion confirmed that he was unable to put much weight on the leg and will have an MRI Monday to determine the full extent of the injury and a possible timetable for his return.
"It's not good," he said.
Woepse sprinited down the runway on his attempt, but felt his hamstring "pop" on his final step before placing the pole down to began his take off for the vault.
Woepse, who battled a hamstring injury in same leg earlier this season, said he was fine coming into the meet.
"I had a good week of practice and everything was good," he said.
Despite being injured, Woepse did win the competition with a meet-record clearance of 16-3.

Boys track and field: MD's Woepse has tear in hamstring
April 26th, 2010, 7:42 pm • Post a Comment • posted by Jason Eichelberger, OC Varsity.com
An MRI on the injured left hamstring of Mater Dei senior pole vaulter Michael Woepse has revealed a slight tear.
Woepse, the national leader and defending state champion, hurt the hamstring Saturday at the Orange County Championships during an attempt to clear 17 feet.
His final clearance of 16-3 was enough to win the competition and set a new meet record.
Woepse said the original timetable he was given for a possible return was three weeks, but that he will see a specialist on Wednesday to get a more specific answer to how long it will take the injury to heal and if there is a legitimate chance for him to return this season.
If the original timetable for a three week return is correct, Woepse could potentially be ready to compete at the CIF-SS Division II preliminaries scheduled for Saturday, May 15th.
Woepse said that he had a little better range of motion today than he did over the weekend, and that he if there was any chance for him to compete again this season, he would do everything possible to continue his quest to repeat as state champion.
“If there’s any chance to jump again, I’m going to take it,” he said.

In order for Michael Woepse to advance to CIF prelims and begin his "Road to the State Meet" he will have to clear 13' 7" at the Trinity league finals on 5/7. That is in 10 days.
This is the at large qualifying standard for DII in the Souther Section of CIF. I am sure that he could clear this height without much of a run. Hopefully he will be healthy enough to do that.
I will be pulling for him along with all of the Trinity league.

Good Luck Mike!

Track and field: Senior year over for Mater Dei's Woepse
April 28, 2010 | 9:27 pm
Michael Woepse of Santa Ana Mater Dei, the nation's top pole vaulter, said Wednesday his senior season is over after an MRI showed a partial tear of his hamstring.

"It's nothing too bad, but if I would try to jump, I could really tear it," he said.

Woepse said it will be three months before he might be back at full speed. He injured his hamstring at the Orange County championships last weekend. He said he intends to support Mater Dei's other pole vaulters.

Woepse has signed with UCLA and is considered the No. 1 pole vault recruit in the nation. He has cleared 17 feet, 6 inches, and was hoping to shoot for 18 feet.

I am very sorry to hear this. Mike is a fine young man and it is disappointing that he will not be able to finish his High School career at the California state meet. I am sure he will be very successful at UCLA.

I thought there might be a chance he could come back but it doesnt look like it now. It wont be the same State Meet without him.
Good luck at UCLA.
