im guessing thats just about it lol. Does anyone have any idea what his grip is? and MAN THATS FRUSTRATING! lol i hate watching someone jump around 18'5" from a four with almost no speed when im trying to hit 16, 17 from a 7. probably more frustrating via the fact that i recently broke my knee and can get down the runway but STILL! lol. looks like steve is going to have another great year.
loving life, making progress, exceeding expectations

As Petrov said in Reno in 1994 describing his 2,4,6 step drills, "all pole vaulters are fast and strong so we must take that away from them". Bubba

Re: Steve Hooker - 5.61m From 8 Steps Video
Yeah that's gotta be about the highest anyone's ever jumped from 8 steps. I know Averbukh jumped 5.70m from 10 steps, and I would assume that Bubka could put up a big bar, and maybe another big guy like Markov could as well, but 5.61m from 8 steps is absolutely absurd. Knowing Hooker's ability to go back to long run and be consistent, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 6m bar in his first competition. I recall that he jumped 5.40m from 8 steps in a similar competition last year around this time, so he must be pleased with his progression.

I'm sure that makes everyone want to quit.

Instead it should make you refocus on what you are doing. This video is great for demonstrating that superior technique can overcome a lack of athleticism. Not saying he's not athletic but he's not bringing anything on the runway from 8. I'd be surprised if he's much faster than 8.2-5 m/s at takeoff. He's just lopping down the runway. Why can he out jump, from 8 steps, 99% of guys running 9.0+ m/s from a full approach? Technique. Technique. Technique.

pretty awesome .. very awesome..
it would be interesting to know the grip and where that shoe is 6 steps, 3 lefts out....
dj
ps i had to go back and look at that again... that's as good as i have ever seen from any run... ever.. never mind the knee drop.. in this instance it helps (physics) the jump and jumper complete a great jump

Yes!
But even after he takes off, you think there's no way he's going to clear that bar ... and then he does! His pushoff is amazing. Yes, technique ... but he's also got one helluva strength to weight ratio ... superhuman!
Has anyone compared his strength in the weight room to other vaulters?
Has anyone seen him do any rings or highbar tricks better than other vaulters?

Pretty sure this video has been linked here before: http://www.flotrack.org/videos/speaker/726-steven-hooker/124881-episode-1-steve-hooker-weight-workout
Just love Parnov's comments to the upside down exercise, and Hooker's reply: "I just love getting like red.... really really red... more like purple, in the face"...
