I have an image in my mind of how I want things to look (it IS subject to change). In the sand, the left leg will ALWAYS be catching the pole. I'll put up film from the clinic I did with altius this past summer if you'd all like... We're doing exactly what I'm doing in the vid (although people aren't taking off as flat).

You can think your doing it right all you want but as soon as you take off the ground your hips swing into the pole, the only thing that stops them is you catch your leg. You are holding two high for your ability and as a result somtimes you dont even have a free take off in the sand. The goal may be to hold high but if you cant do the drill right first with a lower grip you are doing nothing for your self by raising it. In in a trap of thinking your doing it right because you are catching your leg on the pole like altius said you should. But look at this vidio of Isinbayeva doing it the right way. Notice she drives her chest at take off and makes a consious effort to hold her hips and trail leg back the pole almost reches verticle before her leg finally catches on the pole, you simple swing your hips off the ground into the pole and say your holding your hips back, your not holding them back the pole is. Here is Isinbayeva video and your video, because the leg catches they me look simuler to you but they are nothing like each other. (Also her leg bearly taps the pole not really even catching on it, your collides with it.)

Next time you practice lead with your chest into the take off, feel the stretch of the backwards c and hold that position as long as you can once your hips get there let them catch on the pole, dont swing them into the pole defeating the purpose of the drill.

Do you not think that all of this is because of a flat take-off?

(Also remember that the pole I'm using has practically NO give in it... The natural swing is much stronger/more immediate as a consequence.)

The drill's an easy one when the grip is low... It's almost worthless if the pole moves as fast as it does in the original clips put up in the "Sand Vaulting" topic. But, I'll put up video of grips everywhere from 9'-11'6" for my one-steps in my next vid (as well as some bubkas just for becca ;) ).

Alot of it is due to your take off, but just because the take off is bad does not mean you should not try to do the other things right. My point with the low grip is perfect the drill with a lower grip do it perfect then move your grip up gradually. You want to hold as high as you can will doing the drill perfect, not just hold as high as you can. Somthing that might be benificial for your take off is to hold standing grip + 6 and jump over the tip of the pole, then progresivly move your hand grip up until you're eventually holding as high as you can and still jumping over the tip. This will force you to jump up, drive your chest and keep your hips back. Because in this drill if you dont do any of these things when holding high the pole will catch on the ground, if it catches on the ground at the wrong angle you will fall flat on your back. I will post video of what I am talking about on Monday.

No drill is worthless if you can do it right. If you are holding low and going in real fast then get a video and show us. But you seem to have a mindset that you have to be trying things that are too hard for you. Get video of you starting out holding like 9'6 then go up 3 inches each time. The flat take off hurts, but it is not noticeable with grips you can manage, and you can work on jumping up onto the pole with a lower grip. So lets see some videos of you managing the lower grips to see what you are capable of. (this is also kind of how the only video of you vaulting you have ever posted is of you attempting 14'4 after skipping from a pr jump of 11'6... there is no shame in slowly improving and doing things right... big grips and big heights will come as a result of time and learning how to do all the little things right).

I disagree with that.

Yes.

That's the thing... If I had been gripping lower I wouldn't have figured out that I was taking off flat. The more difficult the drill is made (grip), the more numerous the flaws that make themselves manifest.

The fact is gripping to high you cant improve because it's beyond your ability level. Not trying to be mean just stating facts. You have to perfect things before you move on. Remeber practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. With a low grip what you were doing wrong would have still been obvious, and it would be fixable. Just like when your working on tecknique you profect it from 2 lefts once it's perfect you move back one left at a time. You dont get on the runway and try to fix your tecknique from 8 lefts.

We'll see. ;)

More film tomorrow if I can get stretched out enough... And like I said, I'll go from a low grip (too low) to where I feel I should be gripping for the drill (where I am in the posted vid). The run will be taller and the take-off will be more vertical (that should change everything).

I looked at all of your sand vaulting videos you have on you tube, even from a year ago and you are making all the same mistakes you were making then. That means you have one year of bad habits doing the drill already. It did not matter in the videos what your grip was the mistakes were the same, if you are able to correct a year of doing it wrong based on what you think you need to change in one practice tommorow that will be awsome, but also a miracle. If you still can't get it right tommorow I suggest listening to RG that you are simple developing bad habits.

EVERYONE over gripping on stiff pole drills will appear to have a flat take-off.

The more difficult the drill is made (grip), the more numerous the flaws that make themselves manifest.

Your flaws are the reason we are telling you that you are over gripped. Your low skill level does not afford you the opportunity to grip as high as you are trying to grip on those drills.

I'm not sure what you were expecting when you chose to start your "Senior Year Training Blog", but I can only imagine that this wasn't it. We're trying to help you and it seems that you only want to argue about our analogies. Everyone that has chimed in has given you some great technical advice. You should feel fortunate to have so many people concerned about your success or failure.

PP I was curious to what your official PR was and what goals you have for your senior season?? What are you looking to accomplish this year, are you thinking about trying to vault in college, etc??

I'm incredibly thankful that so many people care... And I'm only arguing because I would like to understand where you all are coming from better in a methodology and pedagogical sense. :rose: Please forgive my ego.

KE, my 'official' PR stands currently at 11'6"... I jumped that my first indoor meet of the season last year and then after that the pain really started coming... and that was scary. I made the stupid mistake of trying to keep going instead of figuring out what was wrong immediately. Not only did it totally destroy indoor AND outdoor for me, it killed my grades too. :(

Goals? Let's talk short term for now... My first indoor meet is December 7th. I would like to jump at least 14' there. I will be on a full run (8 lefts). I might be in need of a new pole too... I guess we can discuss that later. And of course, my number 1 goal is to stay healthy. That might be my biggest challenge...

I'll have more film up later today.
