Recruitment Advice

Unread postby mahkone » Sat Oct 03, 2009 9:05 pm

Hi all,

I am a fairly new high school coach with a few quality female pole vaulters entering their junior year. One girl has cleared 10’ 3” and has shown close to 11’ at practice (bungee) as a sophomore. She is a decent jumper with aspirations to pole vault in college. Is there a preferred way to contact coaches about their potential interest in a new athlete? I didn’t want to just “cold email” coaches, but I would like to get the recruitment process started. Can anyone offer any advice?

PS- she is a great student, strong GPA, SAT scores, and currently takes AP courses.

College coaches are not allowed to contact athletes until July 1st going into thier Senior year in high school. At this point, she should be gathering information about schools she may be interested in. Good grades and test scores will help tremendously when it comes time for coaches to consider her. Usually schools will have a potential student athlete questionaire to fill out, but most coaches also welcome the "cold email" about quality athletes.

Coach's can e-mail and send letters Sept 1rst of an athlete's junior year. You can call a coach, and I suggest a resume to send to coaches. The athlete can also go to a campus and visit with a coach anytime. Also going to high profile summer meets Nike, Great Southwest, Golden West, Junior Olympics, ETC also helps. You as a coach and parents have to do their part.
