Gainesville High’s Paul Malquist finished first in the Georgia Games pole vault competition with a height of 16 feet, 2 inches on Friday.
Malquist becomes only the fifth high school athlete in Georgia to clear 16 feet. The vault is among the highest in the country this year.
The win comes after recording a vault of 15-11.5 to finish first at the USA Track and Field Region III competition last week in Maryland.
