First vault after 18 years

Unread postby Pogo Stick » Sun May 17, 2009 6:14 pm

Here is my first vaulting after 18 years or so: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQ0OBF5tl3E
First jump is without bar, second with bungie. Weight 77kg (170lb), grip 3.50m (11'6"), bungie 3.20m (10'6"), pole Essx 425/152 (14').
I am so proud that I even lift my body over the ground that I and cannot be objective, but here are few notes.
You can also see another member of this board on this video, but I will not reveal his identity. ;)

Bad:
- low pole carrying
- turning shoulders (not perpendicular)
- late plant
- lift pole up and forward instead straight up
- flat take-off leg planting - like triple jumper
- late swing
- dropping forward leg
- lack of strength
- lack of speed
- 10 extra pounds around belly

Good:
- decent run and posture
- not being under
- despite late plant decent hands position at take-off

After passing the chord everything is late and slow and I was not able to invert and complete jump.
Another bad thing: I pulled hamstring in last jump. I hope I will recovery enough for BC championship next weekend.

Thanks Becca, I am really excited. I already sent link to all my friends. Even the injury doesn't looks so bad today. I am going to jump next week even if I need to jump with other leg. By the way did anyone tried to jump with "wrong" leg (vault as leftie if you are right hander)? My PB is 2.70m (around 8'9"). :)

I tried vaulting leftie for a month while I was rehabbing a bad hammy. I was terrible! It took me awhile to get used to the carry and plant, but once I was reasonably used to it, I found that I had no hops in my right leg. I think I maybe got on an 11'6 110 pole, when I was using a 12'6 140 or so on my good leg. I think I cleared about 7' :P

But in terms of hand you write with, I write left handed and vault righty. So does Isinbayeva!

Yes we were!

If there was a subtitle to this thread, it would be "First coaching after 34 years where my athlete cleared a bar or bungie". ;)

I also had the pleasure of introducing Pogo to my old HS coach - Jerry Swan - yesterday. He's the prez of the Valley Royals Track Club.

Yeah I've been up there a few times. It is nice to have Ziggy back in the area after a few years in Texas.

Pogo, I'm still amazed that you did so well on your first vaulting practice since 1991!

I'm going to create a new thread on the Masters forum to discuss your training and technique.

Good job man! Keep it up. I did my first vaulting after about as many years as you. It feels really good to get off the ground again.

I like the kid in the background playing in the LJ pit ... lol.

Keep us updated.
