Track and field: Garcia and Sutherland headed to Angelo State

BY JOEL A. ERICKSON
CRANE Isidro Garcia might have more pure speed than any other athlete to come through the Crane track and field program.

Summer Sutherland might be one of the hardest workers the Lady Birds have ever seen.

And after Garcia and Sutherland complete their final seasons at Crane this spring, both athletes will be taking their skills to Angelo State.

Both Garcia and Sutherland signed national letters of intent on Tuesday to compete for the Rams in college.

"I'm really happy about what they gave me," Garcia said. "I want to run the quarter-mile and help out with the mile relay."

Angelo State track and field coach James Reid has put together one of the top Division II programs in Texas, and he should have no problems putting Garcia in any race involving the 400-meter run.

Garcia won the 400-meter Class 2A state title in 48.51 seconds last season.

Angelo State is getting a similarly dominant athlete in Sutherland, who has cleared the 12-foot mark in the pole vault.

Sutherland is also a high jumper and a hurdler, but she expects to focus on a single event for the Rambelles.

Reid has coached four All-American pole vaulters in his time at Angelo State, and the Rambelles need somebody to carry on that tradition.

"If they needed me to do the hurdles or something, I would do it," Sutherland said. "But they really need me for the pole vault."

Both athletes received partial scholarships at Angelo State.

And that's not out of the ordinary. Most track and field programs don't have enough full scholarships to complete an entire team, so the coaches break up the scholarship money.

In Garcia's case, Angelo State is taking care of everything except his room and board. For Sutherland, the scholarship will take care of more than half the cost of college.

"I'm very excited about it," Sutherland said. "I was ready to get it over with and be settled on a college decision."

Finding a good fit helps.

Mead High School’s Justin Graff and Keith Webber have signed national letters of intent to compete for the University of Montana next fall.

Graff, a javelin thrower, has a career-best toss of 192 feet, 2 inches, and has also competed in the long jump and short relay for the Panthers.

Webber is a pole vaulter with a career-best vault of 15-6.

He opened his senior season this spring with back-to-back 15-foot performances, before soaring to his career-best height at the Pasco Invitational two weekends ago.

Douglass is a pole vaulter that will help fill a void that the Cowboys have at the event as well as add depth to the hurdle events. At the 2008 outdoor championships, he won the 110-meter hurdles while placing second in the pole vault. During the 2009 indoor championships, he placed second in the 55-meter hurdles, second in the long jump and finished fourth in the pole vault.

"Brandon is new to hurdling but we really look forward for him to have a heck of a career her at UW," said Yentes.

LEXINGTON, Va. - VMI men’s track and field and cross country has announced its recruiting class for the 2009-10 academic year, according to information released by the coaching staff Thursday. The class is headlined by the 2009 Russian Federation junior cross country champion, Andrey Dmitriev, as well as one of the top pole vaulters in the country, Suffolk’s Allen Kelly. The class includes 13 other competitors, for a total of 15 commitments.

“I am very pleased with our incoming class,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “To bring in one of the top junior mid-distance/distance runners in the world, as well as a nationally-ranked pole vaulter and several other young men that are currently ranked near the top of their events in their respective states, I could not have asked for more from this year’s recruitment efforts.”

Kelly was one of VMI’s earliest commitments, as the Suffolk, Va. native will come to the Institute from King’s Fork High School. There, Kelly posted a PR of 15’8” (4.77 M) in the pole vault, and that success took him to the 2008 outdoor and 2009 indoor Virginia AAA State Championship. Overall, he was ranked as the 13th-best pole vaulter in the country during the 2009 indoor campaign.

College Signings: Goodie's agenda will remain busy at York

Northside High School's Trevor Goodie takes multi-tasking to a whole new level.

In an age of high school athletes specializing in one, or maybe two, sports, Goodie bucked the trend in a major way during his four-year career with the Vikings.

So it should surprise no one that he's even planning on playing more than one sport on the collegiate level. This one, however, wasn't completely his idea.

Shortly after signing with NAIA York College of Nebraska on a wrestling scholarship last week, Goodie was asked by the school's track and field coach to also extend his pole vaulting career.

The good-natured Goodie accepted that offer with a quick smile and a nod.

"I love both sports," Goodie said. "I'd rather do two things I love than just one."

In some circles, Goodie was best known as a two-time state champion wrestler for the Vikings.

He was also a member of the high-profile Northside High wide receiving corps this past fall, catching 29 passes for 435 yards and six TDs.

Goodie's also a member of the Vikings' state championship contending track and field squad. In Wednesday's regional meet, he placed first in the pole vault with a 12-6 effort.

He's even on the school's bowling team.

"I just feel like my life wouldn't be the same without sports,'' Goodie said. "I started out as a freshman doing sports year-round and I just loved it.

"I've juggled academics and athletics all through high school and I'm used to it now."

Goodie's mainstay, though, is wrestling, where there appears to be an open spot available at York College at 157 pounds.

"After football season was over, I thought it was over when I didn't get any offers to play football," Goodie said. "It's kind of rare to get a wrestling scholarship, because there aren't any wrestling schools around here.

"So I e-mailed all kinds of schools and York was the one who kept in touch with me."

York College is a founding member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference.
