Finally Over 15'

Unread postby TylerPorter11 » Tue Apr 28, 2009 7:19 pm

cleared 15' and 15'6 then had a good try at 16'.

holding at 14'6" on a 15' 170 CarbonFX weave 18 flex
weighing 155 and being 6'1-2 ish

My run and plant was horrible... i had worked out the morning before practice. But I got it.

I tuck and shoot but b-rad walker does it *BUT B-rad isn't in and finshes his takeoff!*

Brad walker also finishes his take off and isn't under! Then when he swings he tries not to tuck and shoot, it just happens sometimes as a result of having to cover the pole in time. Not that you should try to emulate any one vaulter, but only emulate the parts of a jump that a vaulter does well!

Sounds like you dont want to be told not to tuck and shoot, and if not then im not sure what to tell you.... if you have 10 days before state dont change anything drastic. You will have best results at state if you focus on your pole drop and finishing your take off before you swing. After state, consider lowering your grip and work on swinging with a straight trail leg to the top of the pole. This will add more energy and you will jump higher than with a tuck and shoot.

oh no no no... i like to be told to do whatever will give me a better effective clearance.

I def. have to work on finishing my take off and getting the hands up sooner.

Also I will work on keeping a longer trail leg but I had been cutting it short due to the amount of pole speed the swing causes it was pushing me way to far in, sorry if i sound like a wannabee noobie.

Awesome! I didnt mean to sound harsh. I assumed too soon that you were one of those "he did is, so ill do it just like him" types. With the attitude you have now you will go 16'+ very soon. You clearly have the talent. The pole drop will help you be taller and quicker at take off, and the longer trail leg will help you cover the pole nicely. You fix those two things and i see you up and over 16'6" very soon. good luck!

Let me add to this ...

Tyler, you're doing so many things wrong (I mean this in a GOOD way!) that I can say with high confidence that you'll be over 17-0 AS SOON AS YOU FIX THEM.

This might take you into the summer ... or into next year ... but it's all within your grasp.

1. You're lowering the pole too early, I think, which might be causing you to lean back in the last part of your run.
2. Your C is very nice, but you still seem to be under a bit. You should have a bit more forwards lean as you pass thru your C.
3. Your trail leg is WAAAAY too short. It should be long and fast.
4. The tuck. :)
5. And this one might be the most important ... you're not getting enough depth into the pit ... even on your makes.

The reason I say that #5 is most important is that you need to start landing further into the pit, and THEN fix up your trail leg and tuck. It can't be the inverse. You need the confidence that you'll land safely before you start mucking with your swing.

And not to be picky, but the title of your vid is "15', 15'6, and 16' Clearances". I didn't see any 16' clearances there.

Sorry Tyler, I don't know what you mean. Everything I said is meant to be POSITIVE. What I mean is that if you had PERFECT technique on your 15-6, then you'd have trouble hitting 16-0. But going 15-6 with LOTS OF FLAWS means that you can EASILY go 17-0 once you fix them!

Or were you referring to my comment about not landing far enough into the pit? If that's it, I'm serious ... ya gotta fix that!

I think the run needs to e talked about as well. You are still WAY OVERSTRIDING in your last 4 total steps, which lowers your effective takeoff angle, kills some of the potential pole speed you can generate, and does not help your jump. Where are you taking off at for holding at 14'6"? I know even when I came from 6 rights (yes im left handed) last year and this year, and was holding about 15' on a 15'7" pole and taking off at about 12, I was only coming from 82' and having great turnover in my last 4 total steps. I just think you might want to take a look at your run, because you are really reaching to get to your takeoff spot, and that does not help the power of your jump, and you can see that you kind of sink on the pole because of a flat takeoff angle.

The great thing is that you still stick with the jump, and clear a great bar and above your grip even through this. I truly believe that if you fix that overstriding problem, alot of your jump will come around very quickly, you will go up pole sizes very quickly, and you will jump higher bars! Again, the jump looks good, and great job on the huge PR!! Good luck at State, and as vaulterboy stated i wouldn't try anything drastic before State since you are jumping well, but its something to think about working on during the "post season."
