Re: Jason Roberts 15ft
tap. obviously somewhat counter productive if used all the time. Im Not going to touch on this again. Im only getting tapped on because i was trying to get on a big pole. i dont ask for it. and i believe i can vault without it but like ive said its a matter of confidence and putting some extra into it to get on the big pole for the first time. secondly i think its very important to note that if your going to comment on here BE PRODUCTIVE if your a double leg drive model vaulter, you wouldnt go ahead and post advice or comments on say a petrov model jump. And you certainley wouldnt try and convert that person to completley change their model. So if your a petrov model coach WHY would you try to comment on a different model vaulter? ... im sorry i wont post any further vids on this site unless there just for fun to show my improvement or a pr. NOTHING constructive gets said and people tend to just tear at each other. theres been some really constructive posts on here but not when it comes to video review. as for me insulting altuis, i dont believe thats the case. FIRST OFF i KNOW who he is. Secondly i know first hand alan has well lets just say a rugged reputation when it comes to the high school vaulters hes coached.which i have NOTHING AGAINST. alans an awesome guy great coach little rough on kids but hey im all for drilling in what needs to be done. I just personally defended myself because all im trying to do is not miss any jumps or waste any time. personally i have just about every jump and every drill ive done all year long at practice. and if i have to get it from the takeoff out then so be it.... like i said im done for now. ill post up vids of pr's and all but just for fun and progress. thanks guys

That's why I'm on your case about the standards, LHS. You can't get BETTER if you don't stay HEALTHY.

Then why are you getting so defensive when we give you advice that is intended to save your life? Your coach is putting you in danger of dying on two levels: by failing to put padding around your standard bases and by pushing you into the pit.

You say that you are trying to get on a bigger pole and your coach is tapping for safety. Maybe you aren't ready for that pole. Your coach should know better about tapping. It is illegal. Period. What's going to happen when you go to your sectional meet and need to be on that pole or a bigger pole?
Post a video with at least your whole plant so we can see if you are doing correctly. As Alius states, the vault starts on the ground.

rainbowgirl28 wrote: there is a difference between giving a tap the first time or two somebody makes a jump in poles, and tapping every jump all of the time. I have less of a problem with the occasional tap, when a vaulter is having a blow through without a tap, and it's a fairly big jump to the next pole. Sometimes that's the only pole you have, and maybe the vaulter has never touched it before and the coach doesn't know how it will look, but they know if the vaulter hesitates they'll come up short. If the coach knows how to tap properly, after 1-3 jumps either the vaulter will be using the pole on their own, or the coach will know it's too big for them and quit trying to force it.
This is the voice of reason. A tap or two to try out a bigger/unfamiliar pole in a practice situation is all that is needed for an athlete and her/his coach to determine whether that pole is appropriate. An experienced coach will know by the level of push needed whether the pole is too stiff and risks the vaulter's safety by coming up short if they were to attempt a full vault on their own.
The athlete benefits by feeling the increased stiffness of an unfamiliar pole and gaining either confidence (that they can get on it then and there independently, or when the adrenaline is flowing in a competition setting), or that more work is needed on their current pole before making the transition. It's not an event where the vaulter even swings. It's just to identify the qualities of the pole.
With 12 years of coaching experience and being tapped in this manner (not repeatedly) as a high schooler back in the day, I'd rather a vaulter land in the landing zone on their first atttempt or two on a bigger pole in practice than come up short because the pole is too stiff or the athlete has some hesitancy at take-off that isn't there on the more familiar pole. I see this as the more safe option to gain the necessary knowledge about the athlete's ability to use the pole effectively and I'm glad to see that at least one person that commands respect on this forum bends a little on this topic.
