He's not in high school. Very few states have middle school pole vaulting, and I have no idea what rules they use. It is reasonable to assume that they are using NFHS rules, but it's not for sure.

Tyler, now that you know your pole length, double-check the distance the standards must be set at. You say 16"-24". Check this with your coach. If he doesn't know, he can check with another coach. But since it's your school record, someone at your school should know for sure.
Since you're blowing thru, you might even want to argue for the record being allowed with the standards 31.5" back. After all, that's an NFHS safety rule, so it must be OK, right? If your "middle school" has no rigid rules on this, then I don't see why 31.5" wouldn't be allowed.
Once you figure that out, set your standards as far back as permissible. Since your school's PV setup isn't "official" and the standards aren't set "officially", just eyeball it or ask your coach to eyeball it ... by balancing your pole vertically in the box and approximately it's distance to the bar. To be a little more precise, you could stand on a step ladder and measure the distance ... in the middle of the bar. Don't worry that the standards aren't "squared to the runway", since you're going to set your record at another school anyway. This is just for PV practice.
Then follow the advice that was given earlier in this thread ... shorten your run so you don't blow thru as much.
But consider this ...
If you're already blowing thru, and the outdoor season has just begun, by the end of your school year you will need a bigger pole! Actually ... you ALREADY need a bigger one!
Try to find out what pole you need (people on PVP here will advise you - just ask), find out what it's going to cost (someone on here might even have one for sale for you), then plead with your coach and/or your parents to pay for it.
To get the proper sized pole, we need to know your body weight and maybe your 40m speed. How fast are you?
If you show enough interest and "potential" (which you've already shown, I think), then you'd be surprised how other people will be willing to open doors for you!
Don't be afraid to ask!
Good luck in your vaulting this year ... and beyond!
Kirk

Re: pole vaulting 10ft on a ten foot pole
thank you very much.... now my speed isnt the greatest but i am a sprinter i think my 100 meter time is about 13.9 to 14 seconds. I tried using a 135 pacer but it was was to stiff for me and i couldnt get any bend out of it. What would you guys recomend pole wise im using a 120 11 foot skypole now do you think a 125 12 foot would be good. also yeah im trying to get the standards right our pole vault pits and standards are crappy but im working on it any more advise will gladly be taken im just hoping if my track coach decides to buy me a pole he doesnt buy me one too big so i can use it multiple years

Until your at your career pinnacle, you probably won't be using ANY pole for multiple years if you train properly. It's a drawback to this sport... it gets WICKED expensive if you get all the proper equipment. If all you have right now is the 12' 125, then I would say it isn't a bad idea (hold at 11' to start). Ideally though, you should get on an 11' 130-135, THEN go up to a 12' 125. Send me a PM, I'd love to help you out more 'completely'... You seem like you could do pretty well!

Hey check out this table and compare the two poles: http://www.skyjumpers.com/articles/pvpr ... table.html that is why it felt way too big.

Re: pole vaulting 10ft on a ten foot pole
yeah i saw the stiffness level well the freshman that is using the pole is just now barely bending it. so i think i just need a longer 120 or 125....but im still trying becuz im getting better. My main prob is that when i go up im vertical but when i go over the bar im like sitting i need to keep straight up veritcal and get my body up

Re: pole vaulting 10ft on a ten foot pole
Tyler, if you can shoot some vid of your next practice and publish it on YouTube, we'll give you some pointers on how you can improve your technique.
We'd like to see you set the school record ... and keep going up, up, up!!!
