Jumping again after 18 years

Unread postby Pogo Stick » Mon Mar 02, 2009 1:37 am

Shortly, after 18 years I am holding pole again.
First, big thanks to Ziggy and his assistant (sorry, forgot his name :() from Valley Royals T&F club in Abbotsford to having me in their indoor facility.

Honestly, before practice I was scarred to death but somehow, entire worm up routines and drills I was doing for years (thanks coach Bere) came back quickly and I became relaxed. It is like bicycle riding - you cannot forget that. Also, you simply cannot screw up when your twins are watching you vaulting for the first time. ;)
I was doing some simple drills from 3 and 4 rights (that's not mistake - I am lefty :) ) and few jumps over bungee. Grip was 3m (10 ft). After 10-15 drills my ankles started to soar, so I made few more and then called off.
Youtube video is here:

Quick Time video (22MB) is here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/204207432/PV28022009.mov.html

This is what I can see:
- Pole carrying is too low, plant is late, but I still manage to straight hands before takeoff
- I push pole too much forward during the plant (I was doing the same 20 years ago)
- Takeoff is more or less ok - I am definitely not under
- I start to swing but then my jump ends. Core and upper body are simply not strong enough (yet)
- Jump over the bungee was the worst

Low pole carrying and late plant are my old bad habits. This will be a problem for higher speed and grip. Also I am not fit enough and have 10 extra pounds.

Next time I will do the same drills but with grip 6"-12" higher and also try vaulting from 6 or 8 lefts and raising grip another 6"-12". And maybe, just maybe, I will try few times over bungee.

Pogo, congratulations for starting your comeback!

I'm so sorry that I couldn't make it yesterday, but I'll be out as soon as I can! I've watched your vids, but I'll provide my advice and commentary in person, while I'm watching/coaching you.

Your first vaults are VERY GOOD ... for a geezer! ;)

I like the way that you've converted your poor quality youtube vid to a better quality QuickTime vid. The best part of QuickTime is that you can control the vid frame-by-frame. The cost for Premium Service of this is apparently 55 euros per year, which converts to $88 Canadian or $69 American. For the improved quality, I would buy the Premium Service. But you're only paying for convenience. Tonight, I just fired it up, then let it download at the slow rate (in the background) while I did other things. This worked just fine.

But there must be other options, where observers don't have to buy a QuickTime Service, isn't there? You should be able to just upload to treemo.com, and download for free. No?

Did you have to buy the service to be able to UPLOAD?

It's very frustrating to try to freeze-frame a youtube vid - in fact it's nearly impossible.

One bit of advice tho ... have the videographer stand a little closer, and pan as you run (unless you just set up on a tripod). Also, get to the right of those 2 people sitting down a bit. The ideal location is straight across from your takeoff.

There's another issue with the background during your plant/takeoff, which is easily fixed by moving the camera to the right. With your dark sweats, you need to have a white background. You have that once you start swinging, but it's hard to analyze your plant/jump without that same contrast.

Again, I'm very impressed with you "jumping again after 18 years"!

Thanks for encouragement and nice words, I am amazed I did not break any bone and not even pull any muscle. All I have is light sore in upper body.

I did not convert YouTube video to Quick Time, I created both files from MiniDV tape, so quality losses were minimal. One of the advantages of working for big IT distributor are free stuff from vendors we got - thanks Corel for free copy of Corel (Ulead) VideoStudio Pro X2. This is amazing video editing tool which allow you to export video from camcorder in almost any format, including "flv" (used by YouTube) and "mov" (Apple Quick Time).

You probably mean Premium Service, not QuickTime Service.
Free service allows you to upload and download files, you don't need Premium account. It has upload limitation of 200MB and daily download limit of 100 GB or so. It is slow, but this is ok in most cases. The biggest limitation of Free account is that uploaded file can be downloaded max. 10 times. So, first 10 lucky visitors can see me in high quality VGA resolution video. Sorry no rainchecks. :)
On the other side, Free service does not require creating account or leaving any personal data, as some other file hosting services do. I don't use Rapidshare enough to justify spending $90 per year for Premium account.
Here is MegaUpload link. They also have limitations for free account, but upload is faster and they don't limit total number of downloads: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HN8TLKET

The camcorder was fixed on tripod and set to highest shutter speed. High shutter speeds unfortunately means dark picture. I will see if I can change brightness and contrast in VideoStudio.
Next time I will try to wear something white and move camera closer. Thanks for advice. By the way, those 2 "people" sitting down are my twins. :)

There's a dilemma in what to wear, since the wall is partly dark and partly white. I'd stick with the dark sweats, and just move the camera angle to the right enough so that your plant/takeoff are against the white background. That way, we can still see all of the swing too.

Oh! And they're waving the white flag, symbolic of "WE SURRENDER!"? :D

Actually, I hope the white flag meant "GOOD, LEGAL JUMP!" :)
