In my opinion, many times it's the activities off the runway at Jan's camp that help a vaulter the most. It's not often that vaulters have access to rope vaulting, ring vault, trampoline, slidebox, weight lifting equimpment, pulley system, etc. . . all under one "roof", so to speak. Jumpers get plenty of runway time, but should really concentrate on the drills and techniques taught at the camp, rather than full vaults. I guarantee vaulters will benefit tremendously from the various "off-runway" activities.

Homie!
A Cal Poly Grad no doubt!
I have spent a great deal of time and money to develop such a place.
Those who live here know. It is special. Just to get to live on the central coast is a blessing~great surf~great weather~no crowds~nice people~ and many great places to PV and play.
It's kind of hard for me sometimes, when all people can think of is long run vaulting, and LA traffic.
Imitative drills are the reason why our sjvsc girls for instance, have excelled the past several years. Ask any body in Ca southern section: Roberts 12'4, Bewley 11'9, Googlimeli 11'6, Stein 11'6, Balentine, 13'8 Johnson 13'6, Costa 13'8, Lundgren 12'9, Pacus 13'.....The list goes on and on, they are all central coast kids who prospered in such system.
The key to improvement is get faster, learn good technique, and don't over jump.
Also, having a great set of poles helps!!!!!!

Jan's the man, baby!!! ;)

Go Skyjumpers!

I've been borrowing Jan's ideas for years and contribute what little success my club has had to what Skyjumpers and Bell Athletics has been kind enough to share with "the rest of us." Most all my kids have seen or own copies of the Sky Systems series.

Keep up the great work Jan!

I have helped Jan coach at the Centerville OH camp, but not the last couple of years. I think his camps are excellent, especially for beginner and intermediate vaulters. The main emphasis is on doing the vault correctly and safely, which are one in the same. About 6 years ago it rained 2 of the 3 days and the only thing the kids could do were drills and my vaulters showed great improvement. I don't think camps should be jump fests, they should be teaching fests and that is what Jan does. There may be better camps for the advanced jumper, but they will not teach the basics any better. I hope to be back at the C'ville camp this summer with my daughter and son in tow, although my daughter has finally discovered her talent for distance running and may give up vaulting(as her father & coach it would be a wise move). Another thing I like about Jan is that it appears that he did not "make" his daughter jump, he allowed her to make that decision in her own time. Nice job at fathering Jan, many fathers could learn a lesson here.

Crump! How are you? :P
I so agree. I see way too many kids who come to camp too early. Usually they have a parent that wants it a lot more then they do. Then later, they are all burnt out before they even reach their physical peak.
I say let the kid decide what they want to do!!!!

went to one a few years back in florida and had the time of my life. east coast meets west coast-cant be much better than that. oh, while i am on the subject-i had plenty of runway time, if not too much so dont listen to these people who try to say that too many kids show up and the pits are slammed. it was worth every penny.

Do ya get a lot of dates with a nickname?
I liked the camp in Florida camp where we took the whole camp surfing that one afternoon. Might have been a few that got into the "not enought jumping at jan's camp syndrome" at that one.
Ha!

Unread postby ~jj~ » Fri Oct 03, 2003 8:41 pm

Yes, yes, yes , yes, yes!
Summer camp will offer plenty of surfing. Usually we go three times (at Lunch break).
If you have gear bring it. Otherwise I also have plenty of gear.
Thanks! See ya in the summer!
