Looks like the 100 will start on time in a downpour while the LJ will be delayed.

The stadium is actually filled with a dull thundering noise as the rain pounds on the membrane roof of the Bird's Nest. It looks like the decathlon 100m will start at 9:20 on schedule; at least they're wearing spikes.

Those are the rain-induced delays just announced. The women's 20km walk, as we've noted, is already underway, and the women are enjoying a few dozen steps undercover as they go through the tunnel to depart from the stadium.

There are officials assiduously sweeping water off the track of the Bird's Nest where it might otherwise be pooling. The walkers are taking off their warmups; this event, at least, will start as scheduled.

It's not yet clear what the conditions will mean for the javelin qualifying, nor the decathlon events. The women's 20km walk appears to be on as scheduled.

Also, most of the Bird's Nest is under cover, so although our walk in was quite wet, our seats (and those of most spectators) are dry.

It has been raining buckets most of the morning, and if we had much wind we would call the conditions "Helskink-esque." It's warmer here in Beijing, though.

Still Kaniskina out in front, and the chase pack is down to nine in the women's 20km walk. The sky seems to be getting brighter, so the hour delays may get us better weather.

To recap the new morning schedule, we have men's javelin group A at 10:10, women's high jump qualifying at 10:50, decathlon long jump at 11:00, javelin group B at 11:40, and decathlon shot put at 13:10. We'll announce any further changes.

Down in the decathlon
Competition has shifted to the long jump. Roman Sebrle of Czech Republic has leaped 7.67m on his first attempt. Tom Pappas of the U.S. just registered a jump of 7.41m. Bryan Clay with a good jump, landing at 7.64m. American Trey Hardee jumped 7.72m, the best thus far.

Decathlon update
Roman Sebrle fould his second jump. Tom Pappas has passed in round 2 and has left the competition area. I'm not sure if there is an injury involved. Bryan Clay has just jumped a season-best 7.78m, good for 1,005 points and further padding his lead. Trey Hardee of the U.S. jumped 7.43m on his second attempt.

Third jumps in decathlon
Roman Sebrle moves up slightly to 7.68m in round 3, winning finish with 980 points. Pappas passes again. Bryan Clay jumped 7.61m, not an improvement. Trey Hardee jumps 7.34m, which was also not an improvement.

Decathlon doings
The decathlon continues with the men's shot put. Tom Pappas of the United States has withdrawn from the competition due to injury. Roman Sebrle has thrown 14.70m on his first attempt. Bryan Clay has thrown a season-best 15.27m on his opening attempt. Trey Hardee has thrown 13.22m on his.

Roman Sebrle has not improved with his second throw, which measured 14.62m. Bryan Clay has thrown 15.53m on his second attempt, a new season best. Trey Hardee's second attempt measured 13.49m, an improvement from the first round.

Clay leads decathlon after three events

BEIJING - Reigning silver medalist Bryan Clay and compatriot Trey Hardee got off to strong starts in the decathlon, sitting first and third after three events during Thursday morning competition.

At times competing in near-downpour conditions almost identical to those he faced when he won the 2005 world title in Helsinki, Clay (Glendora, Calif.) led the decathlon after three events. He won the 100 meters (10.44 - 970 points), and the long jump (7.78m/25-6.25 - 1005), then threw a personal-best 16.27m/53-4.5 (868) for second in the shot put, totaling 2,862 points. He was 145 points ahead of Oleksiy Kasyanov of Ukraine (2717).

Collegiate record holder Hardee (Austin, Texas) was in third place with 2,657 points. Hardee was second to Clay in both the 100 (10.52 - 970 points) and long jump (7.72m/25-3.25 - 990) before throwing the shot 13.49m/44-3.25. 2003 world champion Tom Pappas (Manhattan, Kan.) ran 11.12 in the 100 (834) and took one long jump (7.41m/24-3.75 - 913) before withdrawing with a foot injury.

Clay, Hardee still 1-3 in decathlon

After two more events Thursday night, Bryan Clay (Glendora, Calif.) and Trey Hardee (Austin, Texas) remain in first and third in the decathlon standings.

The 2005 world champion, Clay had a somewhat disappointing performance in the high jump, conducted in a driving rain, by clearing 1.99m/6-6.25 for 794 points and 11th place. He finished by running 48.92 in the 400 for 865, ending the day with 4,521.

Hardee jumped 2.02m/6-7.5 in the high jump (850 points -sixth place) and ran 47.75 in the 400 (921 points - fourth place) to remain in third with 4,428 points. Andrei Krauchanka of Belarus was second with 4,433. Competition resumes Friday morning.

Oleksiy Kasyanov of the Ukraine who's in second, is vaulting in group A, which is starting at 380. All the key players in contention are in B.
