Brunswick High's Slovenski brings home a national title
MARC_MEYERS@TimesRecord.Com
06/23/2008
BRUNSWICK — Brunswick High School's David Slovenski took first place in the Nike Outdoor Track and Field National Championships boys pole vault competition on Saturday at North Carolina A & T in Greensboro, N.C.

"I'm really excited," said Slovenski, who returned to Brunswick on Sunday. "I'm very happy. It's a great way to end my season."

Slovenski cleared 16 feet, 4.5 inches on his first attempt at that height to seal the victory. Jason Pelletier, the Arkansas state champion, finished second with a mark of 16 feet, 1 inch.

"This week I've been working on making first attempts instead of worrying about height or placement," Slovenski said prior to the meet. "I didn't have school this week because I'm a senior, so all I had to do was focus on the pole vault. I know if I make it on the first attempt no matter what height, then I'm winning. I wanted to put some pressure on the other vaulters right away at every height."

Slovenski cleared the bar on first attempts throughout the competition. He cleared 14-09 and 15-03 before getting over the bar at 15-09 in his second attempt. He followed by clearing 16-01.

After setting a New England high school outdoor record at 16-09 recently at Thornton Academy, Slovenski was hopeful to place well at the national competition. Weather conditions appeared to be a factor as other favorites fell to the wayside during the competition.

"It happened really fast," he said. "Some of the other guys got out a little earlier than I expected. It was hot and humid. The wind was a little bit swirling. It wasn't the greatest conditions."

Slovenski is the first Maine athlete to win the Nike Outdoor National high school pole vault championship.

In March, Slovenski competed in the Nike Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Washington, D.C. He finished fifth.

A recent graduate of Brunswick High School, Slovenski was a two-time pole vault champion at the New England level in indoor and outdoor, and captured four state Class A championships in indoor and outdoor. He also helped the Dragons to a state Class A indoor track and field championship in March.

Slovenski holds the New England high school record outdoors at 16-09 and holds the state Class A top marks in both indoor and outdoor.

Fifth in his class academically at Brunswick, Slovenski plans to attend Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., in the fall and compete in track and field for the Tigers. His brother, Steve, who recently finished his junior year, is a pole vaulter at Princeton.

The heat got to a lot of athletes. I should have planned accordingly the 1-2 weeks before this meet by hydrating with enough sodium/potassium and getting myself ready for the elements. Some things you just cant plan for though. Props to Dave, he came out swinging and looked good all day. Congrats man.

And some of us are just in a slump!!!! It was good to see Scott, Jason, and good to meet Riley. There was just something not right about the time and conditions for me.I have to get use to jumping in stadiums where the wind will be one minute out of the south and the next the north. Oh well it was fun to be there.

It was nice seeing everyone too. I think its safe to say, even for Dave, that we didnt all jump to the best of our ability. No sense hiding that, but dave fought the elements and did pretty dang well. I cant wait to see all of you (hopefully) at NCAAS or at least regionals at college next year.

I'd just like to add, Jack, i expect some awesome stuff from you next year. I have never seen someone take their first short run down the runway from 4 steps and get their hips over 16'9" in warm ups. Not anyone with a PR lower than 18' at least. Stick with those short runs till they feel perfect next year, theres no doubt you can jump 17'6" from 5 or 6... seriously. Then when you go back to 7, 8, you will go as high as you want ;). Have fun man and enjoy it. It goes by quick.
