Tina Clausen signs with Friends in three areas

Tina Clausen, a senior at South Haven high school recently signed with Friends University to play basketball, run track, and play the trumpet in the band.
Tina has played basketball under head coach David Hughes since her freshman year at South Haven and earned first team all-league honors this past season averaging 10.3 points and three assists per game.
"Tina was a major factor in our state championship tournament last year as a junior," Hughes said. "She averaged 11 points in the tournament and led the team in scoring in the championship with 16 points."
Tina anxiously awaits her transition to Friends where she will be very busy- an understatement.
"I'm very excited about next year and have been for a while," Clausen said.
With her proverbial plate full, it will be interesting to see how Tina deals with the full load of activities and classes.
Tina said she's going to participate in the three areas next year and wait to see what happens before deciding which activities she will be a part of in the years that follow.
"The band instructor, the basketball coach and track coaches are going to work with me and help me balance all of these activities," Clausen said. "They're being very negotiable."
Coach Hughes is also confident that Tina will be able to compete at the collegiate level.
"Tina is a very good athlete and possesses a good knowledge of the game of basketball," Hughes said. "With her love of the game she will be a nice asset to the Friends program."
The track team will also be receiving a gem as Clausen has won the SCBL league pole vault championship all four years of her high school career.
She currently holds the league record in pole vault, which she set in 2007 with a vault of 10'. She also recently set the South Haven school record this year at Mulvane with a vault of 10'1".
After this season she will have appeared at the state meet four consecutive times and has placed as high as third in the pole vault.
Tina also competes in the high jump, long jump and triple jump.
As Tina has been successful in her athletic endeavors and otherwise, she isn't the only one proud of her accomplishments.
"My family is really excited for me and excited that I'm getting a chance to continue doing what I love to do," Clausen said. "They're excited they'll get to keep watching me play."
On the academic side of things, Tina plans on majoring in health and physical education, as she wants to teach and coach in the future.
South Haven principal, Kim White said, "What a great team and great coaches we have here at South Haven."

Over the weekend in the Spring Fling, several athletes hit some high notes, others had personal bests, but Christian Waddey soared off the charts.
Before he walks down the graduation line Thursday, the Montgomery Bell Academy senior saved his best for last with a whopping 15-11 pole vault in the state track and field meet at MTSU last Friday.
The vault broke a state record, and was 10 inches better than his previous personal best, a 15-1 leap in regionals earlier this month.
Waddey, a Virginia track signee, broke the ’02 record of 15-10¾, set by Michael Hogue of Houston High.

One of the most decorated pole vaulters in the history of the Lancaster-Lebanon League will soar to new heights in Happy Valley.
Penn Manor grad Jocelyn Witmer will vault for Penn State's track and field team.
1 of 5
Penn Manor grad Jocelyn Witmer, who owns the District 3 girls' record with a vault of 12-3, has signed a national letter of intent to continue her scholastic and athletic career at Penn State.
Witmer also considered North Carolina, Arkansas and Richmond. She made visits to PSU and UNC, which both offered scholarship packages.
In the end, Witmer went with Penn State, which also landed another top-shelf L-L League athlete in this year's recruiting haul:
Conestoga Valley grad Vince McNally, a distance specialist and the reigning Lancaster Newspapers Male Athlete of the Year, also signed with Penn State.
"Penn State is a great school academically, and the track team is awesome," said Witmer, who won this year's District 3 Triple-A gold medal with her record vault of 12-3.
"Penn State is the place where I can become the best athlete I know I can be," she said.
Witmer, who will major in Kinesiology with an emphasis on fitness and athletic training, dominated the pole vault event over the past three years.
She won the league title in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons, she won the district title in her junior and senior seasons, and she finished fourth and fifth in the PIAA Meet, respectively, in the last two years.
Witmer will compete for Penn State's indoor team in the winter and for the outdoor team in the spring. She said she will not redshirt, and that she's expecting to step in and compete right away.
Penn State had two pole vaulters on the women's team this past spring — Caitlin Fairbairn and Rachel NeMoyer — and both will be juniors in the fall.
One of Witmer's teammates will be former Columbia standout Katie Shelley, who competes in distance running events for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State's women's team is coming off a fantastic outdoor season.
Under nine-year coach Beth Alford-Sullivan — the reigning Mid-Atlantic Women's Coach of the Year — the Nittany Lions won their first Big 10 championship, and the team sent 13 athletes to the NCAA Championships.
Witmer will be working with 14-year veteran assistant Drew Hardyk, Penn State's pole vault coach. He is the reigning Mid-Atlantic Men's Assistant Coach of the Year.
Witmer is set to compete in the Nike Outdoor Nationals for the first time this weekend at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C.
After that, she'll be a full-time Nittany Lion.
"I have no regrets at all with my college decision," Witmer said. "The coaches at Penn State will push me to be a better athlete, and it will be fun to vault with the girls who are there and to be a part of a great team."
