Shade Weygandt - 13'9.5"

I jumped 13'9.5" at a meet at UTA, not sure on the name of the meet yet.
It was a second attempt make and set a new TEXAS state record and a new junior class record.
it was a little chilly but it turned out to be a great day.
Had one decent attempt at 14'.5" but came down on it.

Rachel told me you had a great day, hers was not so good. Looking forward to seeing you and Paul
at Texas Relays. Hope ya'll both have a great day and make it the first meet with two girls over 14 in one meet.

Weygandt soars to new height

ARLINGTON -- Mansfield's Shade Weygandt set a girls Texas high school pole vault record Friday in the Bobby Lane Invitational at UT-Arlington's Maverick Stadium, clearing 13 feet, 9 1/2 inches.

Weygandt is the defending Class 5A state champion. The national high school outdoor record for girls pole vault is 14-2, set by Mary Saxer of Lancaster, N.Y., in 2005.

Weygandt's previous best this year was 13-8 on Feb. 9 at an indoor meet in Enid, Okla.

"I was so psyched," said Weygandt who started celebrating as soon as her body hit the mat. "I pumped my fist, I hugged my mom."

This year's top outdoor mark reported on trackandfieldnews.com is held by Weygandt's friend, Rachel Laurent, of Houma, La. The senior LSU signee from Vanderbilt Catholic cleared 14-0. She also holds the best indoor mark this season, 13-9 1/4 . Weygandt sent Laurent a text message after her state-record jump.

"My legs didn't feel real fresh or anything today," Weygandt said. "It felt like a normal day, but they had a good facility and it was good conditions. My goal is to clear 14 feet by the end of the season."

Weygandt's vault set a junior national outdoor record and is a Junior Olympic B qualifying mark. The Junior Olympic A qualifying mark is 14-6, but B qualifiers are added until the 24-person field is full.

Also, Weygandt said she and Laurent will compete at the Texas Relays on Friday in Austin.

Weygand's club coach, Paul Richards, said "they bring out the best in one another when they compete."

Shade Weygandt, Jr., Mansfield

Weygandt ranks second in the nation in the pole vault at 13 feet, 9 1/2 inches. She trails the top mark by 2 1/2 inches.

How long she's been at it: Since the eighth grade. "I had a really fun time doing it. I was sort of average until outdoor season my freshman year when I started doing a lot better." She won state in 2006 and '07.

Off the track: She has a 107 average in U.S. history.

Up next: Lancaster Regional Qualifier Meet, 3:30 p.m. Friday

She said it: "In a way it would be [disappointing not to win state for a third consecutive year]. There are a lot of variables that could prevent me from winning it. I still hope to edge closer to that 14-foot mark."
