Inge signs scholarship to vault at Clemson

Two days after winning his third consecutive Northwest Region crown, on the eve of the Group AAA state meet, E.C. Glass senior pole vaulter Daniel Inge committed to Clemson University Thursday on a partial scholarship.
"I'll be jumping for a Division I school next year so I'm very excited," said Inge, who will be in the same recruiting class as Brookville's Ethan Nixon. "It was one of my top three choices and it has really strong athletics and academics (so) I'm really happy.

"Now I know where I'm going, I can relax and focus on getting better," he added. "It takes some of the pressure off my shoulders."

Inge, who won the Northwest Region title by clearing a meet-record 15 feet, 6 inches, will attempt to defend his indoor state championship tonight at George Mason University's Fieldhouse, where the pole vault is located right in the middle of the arena.

"My goal is to jump 16-1?, which would put me second all-time in the Virginia indoor season," said Inge, who won last year's event by clearing 14 feet. "It's going to take a lot more this year to win it."

Next year at Clemson, he will have even higher standards to strive for, replacing Mitch Greeley, a senior who is currently one of the top vaulters in the nation having cleared 18-1.

"That's definitely something to shoot for," Inge said. "It'll be tough, but that's why I'm going to Clemson, to achieve greater heights. Hopefully, I'll at least get an attempt at that height.

"They have a sophomore who has jumped 16-9, so their program is really strong in the vault," he added. "Hopefully, I can add something to it next year."

Inge and his older brother Paul, who competed at LU for one year, were coached by their father, David, all through high school. Next fall, he will receive instruction by Josh Langley, who has coached Greeley for four years.

Competing in the ACC, his family and friends will have the opportunity to see him at meets in North Carolina and Virginia over the next four years.

"Clemson's athletics has been just phenomenal over the past few years," Inge said, noting it just built an indoor facility that is one of the best in the nation. "Their track program has had so much success - they're up there with Florida State, battling for (the ACC title) every year."

Wesley to vault for Akron next season

There are a lot of reasons Marine City senior Joe Wesley will attend Akron University next year.

But let's stick to the ridiculous ones.

"Someone told me the other day, 'What do you call a baby kangaroo?'" joked Joe's father and pole vault coach, Jerry Wesley. "A joey. I guess that made the decision for him."

The Akron Zips feature a kangaroo as their mascot, and the town - dubbed the "Rubber City" - might provide Wesley with that extra bounce to make him a successful collegiate athlete.
Wesley, 17, signed a letter-of-intent with the Zips last month and is focused on finishing the indoor campaign on a high note, and rising to new heights in the outdoor season.

"I think the main thing was the group of guys (who are there)," Wesley said. "I got along with them, and they're close to my age."

Akron has four freshmen who are vaulting about 16 feet, which Wesley has been clearing with regularity.

One of the freshmen, Michael Uhle, cleared more than 17 feet to win the Mid-American Conference indoor championships, a height which also would've won the Big Ten.

"I'd rather have four guys training with me than one or maybe none," Wesley said. "I'd say there's a little more pressure though, because I'm competing against good competition. I want to keep doing better than them. If I was there by myself and knew I was the top guy, I probably wouldn't work as hard."

Wesley, who will study pre-dentistry, also will be pushed by Akron Coach Dennis Mitchell.

"He's coached a few All-Americans," Wesley said. "He's one of the best coaches around."

Wesley, 17, won an event in Findlay, Ohio, during the weekend and will compete Saturday in the Nike Indoor Championships in Washington, D.C.

One of his goals is to clear 17 feet, and another is to approach the national high school all-time record of 17-6½.

Wesley, the defending Division 2 state pole vaulting champion, also considered Indiana, South Florida, Michigan State and Grand Valley State.

Another Quiller coming to BU

Robb Quiller, younger brother of Binghamton University track star Rory Quiller, is among four high school seniors who have signed to run track for BU next season.

Also signing is Vestal High's Samantha Howell, Eric VanAernam of Gardiner and Jessica Conter of Glendale.

Robb Quiller of James I. O'Neill High captured the New York State Indoor title in the pole vault this past weekend.

"He has one of the best takeoffs I have ever seen in a high school athlete," said BU coach Mike Thompson, in a press release.

VanAernam is pole vaulter; Howell is a sprinter who runs the 400; and Conter competed in sprints, jumps, and hurdle events in Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens.

Prep Zone: Ross vaults way to D-I scholarship

Life is especially good for Jacobs senior Sarah Ross, who, in the past six weeks recorded the top indoor pole vault in Illinois and signed an NCAA letter of intent.

Ross cleared her personal-best 11 feet, 6 inches last month, which is No. 1 on the girls Class AA list, according to Illinois Prep Top Times. Two weeks ago, Ross signed witestern Michigan, an NCAA Division I school in Kalamazoo, where she will compete for the women’s track team on scholarship.

Ozark -- His senior season has yet to begin, but Anthony Dewey already knows where his future is heading.



The Ozark High School pole vaulter signed a national letter of intent on March 19 to attend Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.

"It feels great," Dewey said. "It feels good to be committed to a school that has such great athletic programs."

Dewey, who is also a member of the Tigers football team, competed in his first meet of the season on March 20 at Mountain Home, Ark.

Dewey's signing adds to the Tigers' reputation as one of the best track programs in the area.

"It's always good to have those kids go on to the next level. It's a statement to your program and the kids that you have," Ozark coach Justin Emmerton said. "The younger kids see that and it's something that they want to strive for. It's good for everybody around.

"It's a special thing. Not everybody gets to do that."



Pole vault is not one of the premier events at a high school track and field meet. Dewey said the competition jumps up from the high school level.

"It steps up a lot," he said. "There are a lot of big-time athletes."

Emmerton said that pole vault is not an event that just anybody can do, let alone excel at.

"It's not one of the most recognized (events), but it's definitely one of the most dangerous. It takes a special person to do that," he said.

"You'd be amazed how many kids think that they want to do it. Then, they go try it. About the time that they get up and that pole starts to bend, they panic. It takes an athlete to be able to do it."
