I still haven't seen a clear policy as to how long to wait when there's one person left at a height that is doing another event before moving the bar up.

There is a "policy" guideline in T&F casebook on how to handle this.
No official should be without this casebook.

Problem being, the games committee can make any policy they want regarding the handling of a competitior who is in other events. They have to make this known to you and to all coaches in the pre-meet meetings.

Hey lonestar, don't move to Illinois. Most meets, Invites included, our vaulters are required to get back on the runway and vault right after they miss their first. It drives me nuts.

Ironically, the state meet is run "five alive". Go figure.

Not bashing IL but it drive me crazy.

"Required", that is just plain asinine! That policy should be challenged and terminated. The Games Committee cannot force that policy on any event.

I always do that, i feel like i can make a quick correction, and turn a good jump up.

Over the past three years, I have been quiet but not this year. I have talked to the State officials and I'm currently putting together a letter to the head of track and field for the State.

When we go to Invites, I'm shut out of games committees. They think I'm a touble maker. They typically say, "That the way we have always done it." Or, my farvorite, "It takes more time because we have to reset the standards." To which I counter, "Only if you pit crews are not paying attention."

My home meets and conference meets are run "five alive" so my athletes are safe.

In Wisconsin it goes beyond "policy" to [a terrible] "rule."

"8. Contestants in the pole vault are required to take:
a. A second attempt at the same height or pass (in case the first attempt is a miss) immediately after the first attempt.
b. The option also is provided to take the third attempt (in case the second attempt is a miss) immediately after the second attempt.
c. The decision to pass must be communicated to the event judge immediately after the miss."

There is no time for an athlete or coach to think through, much less discuss, what went wrong with the first attempt and what adjustments to make on the second attempt. We have many kids take all three attempts at a height back to back to back. The irony here is that the adjustment that is most often made between attempts is to change the depth of the standards, the very thing that the rule was probably intended to avoid.

As for the rule change I think it is the right thing to do.The old rule was very hard for many to understand. I had to argue at almost every meet we went to about this rule. I am sure most people on this board understood the old rule but sadly most of the vaulters, coaches and officials I see don't bother.

I'll echo Ms Rainbowgirl's feelings.. that is just plain awful.

I suppose they make the vaulter jump again in 90 seconds right?

Last year I submitted a consecutive jump rule change to match that in the
NCAA or USATF rules. Didn't pass, but I'm putting up again.
At least then you would have at least 3 minutes to start the jump.

Regardless, I do not like this policy Wisconsin has imposed on the vaulters.
It's just wrong.

Here is one for you. There is a meet coming up in the middle of February that has a lot of teams. I was told that to help the meet, (PV competition go faster) they have the opening height for the boys at 12-6 and they are only allowing 2 attemps at each height. Should go fast.

90 seconds it is for the second attempt, but the clock doesn't start to tick until the bar is reset and the standards are adjusted if a change is requested -- we're not savages up here!
