Tigers, Chiefs top field in track

EPHRATA -- The Ephrata Tigers scored 66 team points to finish fourth at the Ray Cross Invitational Track Meet Saturday, tops among a large contingent of Basin-area schools competing in the annual event at Ephrata High School.

Ephrata had several excellent individual performances that helped push them up in the team standings, including a one-two finish in the pole vault by Wes Chamberlain and Kyle MacLeod. Chamberlain cleared 12-06 to win the event, while MacLeod was second with a 12-00 vault.

The Tigers' Trystan Mann had a strong outing, winning the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.30 to top Lake Roosevelt's Nick Stanger by one-hundreth of one second. Mann also finished third in the long jump and fourth in the 200 dash Saturday.

The Moses Lake Chiefs ended the day in seventh place with 37 points. While the absence of state champion sprinter Aaron Wafer certainly hurt the Chiefs in the team race, several other Moses Lake competitors stepped up to score points for the team.


Billy Matthews was Moses Lake's only indivudual winner, finishing first in the discus with a throw of 145-03. The Othello Huskies' Jacob Johnston was second in the discus with a 144-111/2, and the Chiefs' Tad Harman finished fourth in the event with a 126-06.

In addition to Johnston, Othello had Rayce Miller finish third in the triple jump with a 41-001/2 to help the Huskies to a 13th-place finish.

For the Odessa Tigers, who finished 10th as a team, Jacob Schmidt was first in the long jump with a 19-11 and Matt Cronrath was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:01.78.

The Soap Lake Eagles and the Lind-Ritzville Broncos finished in a tie for 15th place. For the Eagles, Derek Dailey finished second in the shot with a throw of 47-081/2, while the Broncos were led by their 4x400 relay team's fifth-place finish and a fifth place in the shot for Erik Hille.

Ephrata ladies edge out Othello

EPHRATA -- While the Othello Lady Huskies finished first in five individual events, it was the Ephrata Lady Tigers who finished highest amongst local teams entered into the Ray Cross Invitational Track Meet Saturday.

Ephrata compiled 691/2 team points to finish fourth, with Othello right behind in fifth with 60 points. The Richland Bombers ran away with the team title, compiling 1331/2 points to win the meet by 431/2 points over the second-place Connell Eagles.

Other local teams scoring points at the event were the Moses Lake Lady Chiefs, tied for 13th place with 11 points, the Odessa Lady Tigers, tied for 18th with 7 team points and the Soap Lake Eagles, 22nd with 3 team points.

While the Ephrata Lady Tigers were the dominant team, Othello's Courtney Kirkwood and Allison Walker were the top individuals at Saturday's event.


Kirkwood placed first in the long jump, the 110-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Kirkwood dominated all three events, winning the hurdles by nearly a full second in 15.74, taking the long jump by five inches with a mark of 16-04, and winning the javelin by an impressive 21 feet with her throw of 146-03.

Walker was just as strong a competitor in the triple jump, hitting a mark of 36-063/4 to win the event by nearly four feet. Walker had more competition in the high jump, as her high mark of 5-05 was just enough to get her the title in that event.

Ephrata's lone champion was Erin Boland, who cleared 10-3 in the pole vault to win the event going away. Richland's Jessica Christian was second in the event with a 9-06, and the Lady Tigers' Casey Tate tied for third with a vault of 8-06.

Several other Lady Tigers' teams and individuals did well, including the second-place 4x400 relay team and Erin Laughlin's third-place finish in the 300 hurdles.

For Moses Lake, which was without top athlete Ann Noyes Saturday, there were several strong finishers in the Ephrata meet. Kayla Chamberlain was fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 30-11 and also sixth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.50. Moses Lake teammate Josie Daschel finished seventh in both the shot put and the discus, throwing the shot 29-10 and tossing the discus 83-021/2.

Odessa was represented in the throwing events by Malurie Bramer, who was fifth in the shot put with a 30-111/2 and sixth in the javelin with a 98-01.

Soap Lake's top individual performer was Ariel Wernex, who was sixth in the triple jump with a mark of 30-081/2.

Chinchar, Bryant win at Arcadia

Two local athletes won their respective events Saturday at the 40th Arcadia Invitational track-and-field meet in Southern California.

Michael Chinchar, a senior from Kentwood, won the men's mile with a time of 4 minutes, 9.67 seconds, while Elisa Bryant, an Inglemoor senior, won the girls discus with a throw of 150 feet, 3 inches. Bryant also placed 13th in the shot put (38 feet). Garfield's Stephone Jordan won section two of the boys 110 hurdles in 14.90 seconds. He also won the 300 hurdles seeded event with a 37.96.

The Arcadia Invitational is considered the strongest in-season invitational in the country. This year's invitational had an estimated 3,500 athletes from 27 states

Few other local athletes placed in the top 10 in their respective events. Holy Names' Devin Brooks ran a 14.47 in the women's 100-meter hurdles, good for fourth.

Decatur’s Griffey rolls out a state-best 10.64 to win Harris Invite 100-meter title

Decatur junior Ezra John Griffey is currently the fastest high school runner in the state of Washington. Griffey proved that Tuesday at the 45th annual Bill Harris Invitational track and field meet at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

Griffey rolled out a state-best time in the 100 meters of 10.64 on a windy, somewhat cold day. The time was the 16th best in state history and the fourth-ranked time by a junior in state history.

Dionte Cadogan of Mount Rainier finished second in 10.90 and Lake Washington’s Austin Delaney was third at 10.96 in the best race of the day at the prestigious Bill Harris Invitational.

Griffey also won the 200 Tuesday afternoon in a time of 22.14. The run also is a state best â€â€

Girls track wins five-team

The girls VHS track team came away with a victory in overall team points: Vashon 76, Eatonville 58, Seattle Christian 42 and Chimacum 39, in a meet at Eatonville High School to take on the Cruisers, the Warriors, the Cowboys and a non-league opponent, Bellevue Christian.

Highlights included Alana Robinson winning the 400 in 63.7, and the girls all competing in multiple events to get the victory.

Senior Liam Rockwell made his first appearance in the mile, clocking in at 4:51.

The tracksters made a short trip to Fife High School on Saturday, March 31, to compete in the April Fools Invitational with six other teams from 1A and 2A in the same area.

The girls took fourth place as a team with Valerie Bauer taking second in the mile at 5:44 and Katlyn Twietmeyer winning the 800 by out-kicking her opponent with 300 meters to go and clocking 2:34.

First year student Kate Straub moved into third place on the school’s all-time list for the 300 hurdles with her time of 51.5.

The girls 4x400 relay team of Twietmeyer, Bauer, Kiki Means and Kelly Costello ran the 10th-fastest in school history and took first place at 4:23.2.

The boys came up against some tough competition but gave a great effort in the relays and sprints.

Junior Danny Salonen gave a strong performance in the 200, stopping the clock at 24.8. The team is gaining confidence, according to coach Kevin Ross, and getting stronger from meet to meet. The team, he said, is starting to jell as a group, and the athletes are working hard in turnouts.

You've heard of "The Rock." Now get to know "Throck."

A member of the National Honor Society, Ryan Throckmorton dreams of a career in mechanical engineering. Besides being a great way to make friends, participating in sports teaches you a ton about time management, he said: "When you get home from a long day of school and practice, there's only a limited amount of time."

Take some time to learn more about this well-rounded thrower.

Coaches' corner A four-year member of the track and field team, Throckmorton is known for his positive demeanor. "He is probably one of the nicest kids we've ever worked with," Murphy head coach Don McClure said.

Jeff Schmidt, Throckmorton's throws coach, said the senior stays focused and encourages teammates: "He's just one of those kids that everyone likes having around. He's always supportive."

Big shot Throckmorton competes in two events: the shot put and discus. As a freshman, he tried the javelin but couldn't get the hang of it. "But with shot and disc, I've always been pretty good ... so I just continued pursuing those and working on form and technique." His personal records are 40 feet in the shot put and 109 feet in the discus.

Changes Schmidt is the fourth throws coach Throckmorton has had in four seasons. Adjusting to different coaching styles has been difficult, he said: "You have one form down. Then it gets tweaked a little bit each year."

Favorite pro sports team The Seattle Mariners. Throckmorton has tickets to watch the M's play Minnesota next week.

What would you do with $1 million? Invest, and buy a sweet ride. "I don't usually spend a whole lot of money. I'd probably take out a chunk for college and buy a new car," said Throckmorton. His speed machine of choice: A blue Chevy Camaro.

Favorite school subjects Math and science. Said Throckmorton, "I like the certainty of (math and science): 'This has to be the (correct) answer.'"

Favorite TV show "South Park," Comedy Central's long-running, Emmy-award winning animated series. The hilarious, controversial show always surprises Throckmorton: "You don't really know what to expect. Anything can happen. Plus, they always have a good moral at the end."

Favorite video game "Scarface: The World Is Yours." Based on the 1983 movie "Scarface" starring Al Pacino as Miami gangster Tony Montana, the game puts a twist on the film's violent finale: What if Tony Montana didn't die?

Snohomish girls compete in Calif. track meet

ARCADIA, Calif. - Spring break didn't mean sleeping in, daytime television or trips to the mall for Snohomish's Kara Sporrong, Jessica Yates and Ellie Bonner,.

Rather, the trio spent the better part of their break competing at the Arcadia Invitational, one of the nation's most prestigious prep track and field competitions.

The highlight for the Panthers came from Sporrong, who ran a time of 11 minutes, 5 seconds in the 3,200-meter race.

According to Snohomish coach Dan Parker, Sporrong's time was 11 to 12 seconds faster than her previous fast time of the season.

"She (Kara) is getting into better shape and reacting to her competition," Parker said.

Her 3,200-meter time is also one of the three fastest in the State of Washington this year.

It was quite an accomplishment, on quite a stage.

Each year, top high school prospects come to the Arcadia Invite to break track and field records, qualify for state and national competitions and gauge where they rank amongst their peers.

"This is a track meet like no other; it's a fantastic experience," Parker noted. "National bests are being set (this weekend)."

While not placing, Yates (triple-jump) and Bonner (mile run) both recorded competitive marks.

"Being that we start our season three weeks after the California schools, I'm pleased with our progress and where we are at."

The Snohomish track team heads to Edmonds-Woodway on Thursday and then to Eastern Washington next weekend to compete in the Pasco Invitational.
