Murphy: The bar couldn't be set much higher for Dragila
She's 35, recently had Achilles' tendon surgery, and she's talking Olympics
Edition Date: 10-10-2006
Source[list]Stacy Dragila conquered the doubters once before. More precisely, the Idaho State graduate soared over them.

In 2000, five years after Dragila decided to see how high she could fly, she captured the first Olympic gold medal in the women's pole vault at the Summer Games in Sydney.

"When I first started doing pole vault, so many people kept saying women couldn't do the pole vault, that they didn't have the determination to jump like the men do,'' she said. "When I kept hearing that over and over, I so badly wanted to prove those people wrong and show those people I could do it."

Take that.

Now 35, Dragila is trying to do it again. Trying to prove that those who claim she is too old and too broken down are wrong â€â€

I would never count her out. She’s one tough athlete and a great competitor, not to mention a tremendous person. The leader may have jumped ahead but the pack really hasn’t significantly moved forward so I think she can get back in the game.

As far as the injury/surgery goes, I've had two Achilles surgeries (both on my take off foot) including the repair of a 7" vertical split. Mine is better than it ever was. Bubba
