Re the 1500 time - yes many folk, including the great Daley T have scored well with poor (5.00 min plus) 1500s. However what is often forgotten about having a good 1500 is

As I remember, Daley Thompson used to train for nine events excluding the 1500. He won two gold medals and would have won a third if he stayed healthy in 1988. His focus was on the explosive events.

Note i never said you could move from 5.00 to 4.20 in a year but then I doubt anyone could move from 5.00m to 5.60 in a year either.

This topic is close to my heart because back in the late 90s we had a decathlete in adelaide who might have given the world record a nudge but for poor performances in both of the events in question. In a score of 8490 he vaulted 5.00m and ran outside 5.00 for the 1500. "A man convinced against his will remains of the same opinion still."


keep in mind i weighed 212lbs when i went 8465. it was at least 100 degrees on the track. and it was my first meet in over a month and i was coming off an ankle injury that prevented me from doing ANY training at all.

i get what you're saying about longer warm-ups and cool downs. but you don't jack down your time like that by doing stuff every other week on the track and throwing in long runs. i mean we already do a ton more than that in fall and winter for base/work capacity training. and do harder workouts in the spring than 5x400.

and lets be honest... since when is a 4:38 mile a jog in the park for a sprinter/thrower/jumper after 9 events? ;)

well anyways, haha back to the 100, ive run 11.4 hand time. Most of the insane jumpers can run real low 11's or even in the 10s.

maybe he ran a 12 flat if he didnt use blocks and fell twice during the race, haha.

theres no way we was running a 12 flat pace down the runway when he got 19'5, i can tell you that right now. i run 12 flat, and theres no way anyone with my speed could even get a tiny bend out of a 17 foot pole. i cant even bend a 14' thats only 20 lbs over my weight, and all the time i hear that have pretty good form, im sure its not as good as Vigneron's form, but every meet i go to, frm other vaulters i hear "i wish i got vertical like you" and "i wish we could put together your form and my speed." and from the coaches i hear things like "you would be a great vaulter if you worked on your speed, you have great form, i wish my kids had your technique."

i think 19'5 is do-able with a 15'6 pole, but i still dont think anyone could get on a stiff enough 15'6 to get the 4ft over their handhold. Ill believe it when i see it.

You are right, Earl had a passive lead leg and I do not know how fast he was in the 100 meters. He is 6’3â€Â
