South standouts lead Valley students in signing

By David Hughes/Tribune-Star

Wednesday was the first day of the 2005-06 high school year that senior athletes could officially commit themselves to a college for next year.

So a few Terre Haute South athletes decided to sign national letters-of-intent Wednesday, while some baseball standouts from Terre Haute North are planning to sign today.

For South, Travis Smith (golf), Rachel McCleary (softball), Diana Price (track and field) and Adriane Wunderlich (cross country and track and field) put their “John Hancockâ€Â

Perryman's selection reunites brother-sister pole vaulters at UofA

By Larry Ward
Staff Writer

Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz might have felt at home in Kansas, but Jaci Perryman believes she will be more comfortable in Tucson.

After making five recruiting trips, including visits to the University of Kansas and Kansas State, the Desert Vista High School pole vaulter was expected to sign a national letter of intent Thursday night to attend the University of Arizona on a track scholarship.

The presence of her brother, Dutch, who won the boys' state pole vault championship last spring, already at UofA on a track scholarship will reunite the brother-sister pole vault tandem.

However, Jaci said her brother had no influence on her decision.

"My decision was based on a lot of things," Perryman said. "I really liked the school and it felt right for me. Dutch already being there was a plus, but I can't say that it influenced my decision that much. It's always a good thing to have though, and he'll be a big help."

In addition to Kansas and Kansas State, Brigham Young and the University of Washington also pursued Perryman.

"It came down to Kansas and the UofA," Perryman said. "Distance (from home) wasn't really part of it either. I just felt better there than I would have in other areas."

Perryman made her decision after returning from Kansas last weekend.

"There were so many choices and I thought about it a lot because I was making a decision about my future," Perryman said. "But it came down to I felt a lot better about the UofA."

The Wildcats lost their pole vault coach at the end of last spring, and have since hired Sheldon Blockburger, who came from Cal Poly where he coached two NCAA pole vault champions. The change didn't concern Perryman.

"They had a good program and with new coaches they'll be establishing another good program," Perryman said. It's good to get it done so I can set some new goals."

Perryman wanted to sign early, but added she was willing to wait as well. Her decision to sign now will allow Perryman to enjoy the rest of her senior year without distractions, said Desert Vista vault coach Jeff Guy, who has coached her at Desert Vista and on his pole vault club team.

"She'll be more relaxed, not have that pressure and can concentrate on the vault," Guy said.

Perryman cleared 12 feet, 3 inches to capture the Class 5A state title last spring, but she came close several times during the season to eclipsing 13 feet. Guy believes she will make an immediate impact at UofA.

"Once she reaches her goal, she'll be ready for down there and will be their top vaulter," Guy predicted. "I would say it makes a good fit for her and with her brother there it will make a good brother-sister combo."

Guy has sent seven vaulters to the Wildcat program including Dutch, former Mountain Pointe vaulter Adam Ziminsky and former Tempe Corona del Sol product Sam Jacobson.

Regan's next big vault is to UCLA

Easton star and former state champ will join one of the elite programs.
By Stephen Miller
Of The Morning Call

California's warm climate didn't play as big a role in Lindsay Regan's college selection as she thought it would.

This past spring, Regan, an Easton High School senior, said she wanted to attend a school where she could pole-vault outdoors all year. Going to UCLA will give her that chance.

But the climate didn't clinch Regan's choice. Her late-October visit to the UCLA campus did.

''Mainly, I walked onto campus and was accepted by everyone,'' she said. ''[I liked] the environment there and the mix of academics and athletics.''
