Okay, in less than two weeks (on October 6th) I will be getting ACL reconstruction surgery... now I know it takes awhile for all of the PT and rehab n stuff... but would anyone think that I'd be able to swim by December... like competitively?

in my experience at college, the stronger your knee is before you go in, the faster the recovery. I've seen people back in less than 3 months, but the typical is probably 6 minths, you should talk to your dr. about what you can do to prepare and your goals.

it also depends what direction you doctor is going. Are they using the hamstring tendon from the injured leg, the pateller tendon of the opposite leg, or a cadavor's achillies tendon?

I hope I am not over stepping my bounds, but I just wanted to make sure you know that Allografts (a cadavers achillies would fall into this category) are not as strong as the other methods. Simply put, someone else's tissue is not as stron as your own tissue.

The possibility of another injury is increased.

This is just what I have read and have been taught, I have no idea how it actually all works....i am not a Doctor.

I guess being a pole vaulter it isnt' that big of a deal compaired to a soccer player or basketball player........motions that cause the injury dont' happen in vauting generally.
