I hear they can give you a shot for it too. That's what I hear anyway.... not from experience though.bjvando wrote:and to actually HAVE ' the clap"

As for acknowledging the crowd, I think it is the right thing to do. And while you are at it also thank the officials and give ataboys to the competition. It's just good sportsmanship, win or lose. Think of it this way,... Would you rather having them cheering for you or against you? If you act arrogant or snub them, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which they will do.

Clap
Hey....SOME people in Arkansas know how to clap in rhythm!!!!
That's Jodie!!
A scripture that makes me think of all you girls and guys pole vaulting....
Habakkuk 3:19
The Sovereign LORD is my strength;
he makes my feet like the feet of a deer,
he enables me to go on the heights.

Ok, on the clap, I have just never been at a pole vault pit where the clap was performed with any rhthym, pole vault fans just seem devoid of getting together on clapping their hands together. I love the fact the fans are into it, it just sounds like alot of people clapping their hands at different times. On acknowledging the crowd, I have alway thought it a classy thing to do to recognize the fans in the stands who have sat through a pv event. Most of them have paid a fee to sit and cheer on the vaulters. Even after a no height, if the crowd gives that sympathetic applause after a third miss, I find it much classier if a vaulter gives a wave to the crowd, a little thanks for the support and walks off the pit with his or her head held high knowing there will be a better day. I think it a much better way than acting like there is no crowd, or throwing poles or profanity.
compete and jump safe, have fun

Y'all need to make a trip out to Hayward Field. I find it tough going from a rhythmitic Hayward clap to an out of sync Mt SAC clap, for example. But then again that is to be expected out of Track Town, USA.

Supposedly a few years ago when Tim Lobinger jumped at Mt SAC he took time out of the competition to teach the crowd how to properly clap in rhythm.

people at drake were goin all over the place wit the clap. My objection is that with the rythmic clap you have to start slow enough so that u can go faster as the vaulter approaches the vault. @ Drake they would just start out really fast...how can u get any faster. So as vaulters we need to make sure we get all the claps started slow enough to get faster.

Simple solution: Set a WR every time and you have no real choice but to acknowlege the crowd. It seemed to work damn skippy for Bubka...
