Hi Russ,

Good to hear from you. It's been a while.

A side issue that really was at the heart of some discussions on this board is answered in the last sentence of situation 2 above. Simply put, if you clear the bar it doesn't matter what has touched the pit beyond the zero plane, before or after the clearance.

rule change

Unread postby fchipr » Mon Mar 10, 2008 6:09 pm

I officiated a boys HS PV competition this last weekend, and all kids that were trying to bail out on a bad run all broke the plane anyhow. Except this one kid. He was on a 7 step and it was along time between jumps. Each new ht he jumped at, on his first attempt, he was slow. At his mid mark he was about two feet slow, where he then put on the breaks in the last three lefts. The pole tip was lowered into the box and he popped about 6 inches off the ground in a controlled manner (no turning around sliding grips and hanging on for life). He prompt;y jogged back to his 7 step and came again. this time with a good mid mark and a good take off and clearence. he did this on three seperate first ht attempts.

i'm not a fan of the rulle but in this instance it seemed to apply.

thanx

can you say lots of front bun next year??

I know the person who submitted this change and I know it was not the intent of the change, that the touch of a bending pole be counted as a foul if you pop up and come back down without otherwise landing beyond the 0 plane.

We'll just have to live with this interpretation until a change request is submitted for 2009. That person will be submitting such a change.

The change was modeled after a USATF rule note found in the pole vault subsection...
NOTE 2: it is not a foul solely because the pole touches the vaulting pad, in the course of an attempt, when planted in the box.

NCAA does not have any note, nor official interpretation on this subject. I change/clarification will be submitted to that rule body as well.
