Vaulting Gloves?

I know there are a few topics that mention them, but the other day my dad asked why pole vaulters dont use gloves to get a better grip on the pole, and i didnt have a straight answer for him. I told him it is kind of just preference, and that maybe it feels like it would slip a little, i didnt know. Has anyone experiemented with vaulting gloves, what was it like, pros and cons? thanks

I know there used to be rules against wearing gloves. Not sure what the latest is in the various rule books.

there still really picky about 2 layers of tape so i bet that its still illegal

Its interesting all the sports they allow gloves to improve performance like golf, football, tennis, baseball, yet they dont allow it in pole vaulting. Im impartial to it, i dont need gloves, and i dont know if it would really help either, but thats an interesting rule.

i'd bet gloves would get rid of those nasty hand blisters most everyone gets...but as far as i know they are illigal

they would deffinitly help. The only thing i could picture being bad would be not allowing the pole to rotate in your hands at all if you bend was a little to the side, and if the gloves are gripping the pole hard, i bet your hand would kind of slip down and rotate the glove a little, making your handhold off.

Gloves are illegal for both HS and Masters. I use gloves at practice when the weather is cold and I still want to jump. It makes a big difference to me under those conditions.

I believe I have the rules correct. Gloves / hand coverings are only allowed at the NCAA - not high school or IAAF. Every time the subject of rules comes up I can't believe everyone can't get together and have one set of rules for all PVing.

The following is quoted from the 2006 NCAA rules book and confirms drcurran is correct.
RULE 6/FIELD EVENTS Page 91
ARTICLE 4. A maximum of two markers may be placed adjacent to the
runway, but not on the runway. These markers must be made with a material
that is approved by meet management. Shoes are not acceptable markers.
The use of unacceptable material shall lead to the disqualification of the
competitor. This restriction applies to practice, warm-up and competition.
A competitor may not place foreign material in the vaulting box.
The vaulting pole shall have no assisting device other than two layers of
adhesive tape applied with uniform thickness above the bottom of the hand
hold.
Competitors may use a glove or an adhesive substance on their hands or
on the pole in order to obtain a better grip. The use of a forearm cover to
prevent injuries also shall be allowed.

Interesting. I didn't even know gloves were ever allowed. Does anyone know what the NAIA rules are on this matter?
