it mainly depends where he is with his technique...

it also depends on whether you want to shell out that kind of cash assuming he is going to be needing more pole...

This question, I can answer...No! save the $$ and put it towards the next next pole when the time comes. Of course, sometimes it depends what is in stock. I once ended up with a 15' carbon over a clear glass pole because it was the only thing in the right size in stock, but switched back to the plain clear poles subsequently. I never did get to 16' poles, but i hear that this is when the carbon starts to be worth the extra bucks.

If money is no object (ha, is this ever the case?), for a 14-6or7 pole, I would still avoid carbon and simply buy MORE poles instead.

I agree. At this stage in his career it is better to save the money and buy more poles. 14'7 glass poles are not much heavier than carbons, and should certainly not feel excessively heavy to a high school boy who is strong enough to jump on one on the first place.

Like I said in earlier post, we won a pole in the raffle. I'm not sure if we can get the carbon or not. The smallest carbon Essx makes is a 14'7" 165 which seems to be the next step up in pole size from the pole I just bought him. However, I've heard on here that some vaulters think they are to light. So, if the carbon is free, should we get it or stick with the non-carbon? I estimate that Jonathan will need 5 more poles before he gets to college. Should I get him used to the carbons now? We have no experience with carbons so any advice would help.
