meets

Unread postby jmayesvaultmom » Fri Jan 24, 2003 8:55 am

Also..again...check with your state athletic association before entering any meet other than the ones your school goes to. They would be the ones that coaches from OTHER schools would go to to see if you were competing legally. If you get the ok from them, then you KNOW for sure. Sometimes even athletic directors aren't clear on all the answers and make mistakes. According to Arkansas rules, Jodie can't represent FHS or wear their uniform or logo. She HAS to compete unattached or for a track club. If she wants to represent FHS, the AAA has to sanction the meet and it has to be sanctioned by NFHS (because some meets will not allow you to compete for anybody BUT your high school.) But Arkansas doesn't have a limit to the number of meets in a season. Some states do and even these meets can count. So best to check with the "bosses!" :P
That's Jodie!!

it's worth it to me to check out the rules and talk to my coach about it because we only went to two invitationals this whole season and most of our regular meets were cancelled due to snow.(not that it matters because they don't have the vault anyways). so what about those....all comers meets? what the heck are they anyways? i was told that i could go and vault at them but i don't get how they work.

another weird pole carry

Unread postby ashcraftpv » Thu Jan 30, 2003 9:02 pm

back in 1993, i saw another strange pole carry method that some guys in Pennsylvania were doing. A dude from Penn State (Mason Ternay?) was carrying the pole in one hand while pumping is bottom arm. He would pick the pole up to vertical until it rested against his shoulder, let go with his bottom hand, then take off running. He'd bust a** out of the back then start lowering the pole at about his mid, then grab the pole at about 30' out and do a drop-tip type plant. I think they called it the "One Arm Blast Off" or something like that. Strangest damn thing i've ever seen on the runway.

I've messed around with it a few times, but had problems maintaining my balance while lowering the pole(with a long pole), and had erratic bottom hand placement. i wouldn't reccommend it.....

never heard of that technique before. kinda funny. lol but hey, whatever floats your boat as far as vaulting goes in my oppinion just as long as it's not dangerouse. : ) is it true that a new rule about standards has been made or is that just some rumor? i heard something like " they won't be allowed closer than 16 soon" . is it true?

Yeah there are all sorts of new rules about standards this year... I am not sure where they have to be for high school, but I think for college they cannot be closer than 45 cm, and the pegs are now shorter. Oh yeah and the crossbar ends are supposed to be oval with only one flat side.

that's what it should be anyway. i NEVER let any of my kids jump with their standards closer than that.

here's a quick piece of advice to all you younger jumpers out there. If you have your standards on 18" or closer and are stil coming up short:

DROP YOUR GRIP OR USE A SMALLER POLE!

thanks ;)

well, the only problem with some of the new college rules, is that the companies, as far as i've been told, are going to start making all their equipment to those standards. That means, if a hs is to order new equipment, it will meet the college standards. As for the standard placement, i completely agree with ashcraft about there being no need to be closer than 18 inches.
Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. - Muhammad Ali

i think that standards should be moved back too but there's just one problem w/ that: how do you teach kids to vault w/ their standards all the way back at 18 when they have always had them at 14 and done just fine? i mean like people that have been doing it for years and haven't had any problems w/ it before or a coach who taught them that it's ok to have the standards very close.
