Hello everybody, i was just thinking about what it is that makes anyone who does polevault extremely obsessed with it?? It is like an addiction...once you start you can't stop. You can't stop thinking about it or talking. no matter haow much you try, every conversation brings pv up @ least once. I think that the reason we all are obsessed is becasue pv is the coolest sport in the world...but I just wanted to know what you guys think about why pole vault is so addicting??
Thanks,
Ali

I don't know why i/we are obssessed, but i like it. I think mainly its because 1. most ppl who vault are lazy and no1 really likes running 800 repeats 2. it looks incredibly "easy" when u look at people who can jump, and then when you try its really hard, like a rubics cube, it kinda just traps you. 3. When you do get decent, there is ALWAYS something you can fix, so again, it traps you there. 4. Come on, pole vaulters are the coolest people ever...Fiberglass pole...human...just the best combonation in the world. Also the best explanation of everthing i can think of is when i was at Sky Jumpers. Jan said to a guy "you need to shoot through the cylinder while upside down" the guy responded "its not human nature to go upside down and push off" Jan responded "its not human nature to get a fiberglass pole, run balls out and plant the pole...GO TRY AGAIN"

im not sure i like being called lazy. the vaulters at Hope College end up doing all the workouts the short sprinters do after we do our vault workouts. then, we go into the weight room and get an extra 3-4 core exercises to do ontop of the sprints/jumps workouts. but i love the jan johnson comment!

I love the comment about human nature...it is so true!! i agree that it hooks you because you can always fix something and go higher...you always want to try again. When my coach would say last jump, i'd jump and then beg him to let me go again so that i could have another chance...i guess it's kinda like that.

Ali, I'm like that a lot at practice... after my jumps I'd always tell my coach "One more jump and I'm good" then end up taking about 6 more.
Can't get enough of it.

It's a lot cheaper than racing stock cars. (spend a couple of years owning and driving a hobby stock race car and you'll know what I mean). Same addiction, same thrill, same potential injury factor, just vaulting is cheaper. One reason that I don't go to a Saturday night race till the end of the season. If I'd go earlier, there'd be a race car in my garage the next week. I don't think I could manage the schedule, wrench on the race car, go out and jump, wrench on the race car, go out and jump........................Later........Mike

Pole Vaulting is the greatest thing that I ahve ever done. It is ridiculously addicting. I swear i think about Vaulting more than I thin about girls!!!! I split my head open vaulting last week and had to get 5 staples in my head, and all I could think about was how mad I was that I couldnt vault again taht night. I think another thing that makes it great is the fact that when someone asks you what you do and you say pole vault, they say your crazy or I would never do that. Only 1 group of people understand why it is so addicting, and that is us vaulters. I love Pole Vaulting and I always will, it's a way of life, enjoy it!!!!

I agree with pretty much everything in this except the lazy part. I work hard almost daily running lifting and doing gymnastics to better my vaulting technique and overal phyisical ability. All top vaulters hell even the ones who are truly addicted to it try there hardest to get better. I dont see this to be in anyway an act of laziness.

When i said lazy, i really meant, i really dont feel like doing 800 repeats, i'd rather to hard sprints.
