Instead of analyzing data from vaults, I would like to correlate which athletic feats (vertical jump, 100m speed, standing long jump, power clean, etc) contribute to the best vaulters. First of all, I need to gather as much info. Here's some to start with:

Sergey Bubka, 10.2 26'0 long jump
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/ ... /index.htm

Billy Olson 10.3, 25'7 long jump
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/ ... /index.htm

Aleksandr Averbukh 10.64, 7.53 long jump, 15.12 shot put, 2.05 high jump
http://www.decathlon2000.ee/pdf/person/Averbukh.pdf

Dave Volz 6'8 high jump, 23'1 3/4 long jump, 14.25 110h
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/ ... /index.htm

Steve Hooker, 10.82+
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_Hooker

Jean Galfione, 10.90, 7.21 long jump, 11.90 shot put, 2.01 high jump

Thierry Vigneron, 11.61, 6.85 long jump, 10.86 shot put, 1.87 high jump

Philippe Collet, 10.89, 6.66 long jump, 12.20 shot put, 1.80 high jump

Vladimir Polyakov, 7.08 60m, 7.20 long jump, 12.56 shot put, 2.05 high jump

Wladyslaw Kozakiewicz, 11.40, 7.17 long jump, 13.62 shot put, 2.04 high jump

(all above: http://www.decathlon2000.ee/eng/10athlon.php)

Tim Bright, 10.73, 7.49 long jump, 14.41 shot put, 2.11 high jump

It would be worth getting a subscription to http://www.tilastopaja.org/ this would probably have a lot of the information you seek, especially from more recent vaulters.

Thierry Vigneron seems within reach. Was he really tall or did he run the 100 injured, cuz if not I'm going to be very inspired. I can't long jump that far yet, but I can run a 100 about that fast.

Also, I love the thread, very cool to look at.

I know he hasn't vaulted nearly as high as the others on the list (YET?), but U of Oregon senior Ashton Eaton's numbers are interesting for comparison:
100m: 10.34
110H: 13.64w
LJ: 7.88m (25.85ft)
HJ: 2.11m (6ft 11in)
PV: 5.26m (17ft 4in)

Anybody else think he's likely to vault a lot higher in the future? After breaking the heptathalon WR this winter and currently only a few points off the world leader in the decathalon, I would expect the PV to be a target for major improvement in the years to come as he chases the WR. I believe Averbukh and Bright were both successful decathletes before taking up the vault full time.

I haven't studied the decathlon tables for a long time, but I get the impression that you don't get many more points once you're hitting 5.20 or 5.30. He's there now, so I assume that he's better off to improve his overall score by working on the 9 other events ... more than PV. The problem with PV is that it takes so much damn time to get cm improvements - well out of proportion of the training time req'd.

Check out the video I have of Eaton vaulting in the thread about him setting the hep world record. It's not going to take much work for him to jump higher.
