This just in from Greg Duplantis himself, posted on another forum. He had been asked just exactly how tall he was when he first made 19'. Here's his reply (in quotation marks):

"It appears I am getting shorter as I get older. Literally. But, at the time I jumped 5.80 19-1/4 I was exactly 5'-6''. I have seen my height quoted as 5-10" to now an alltime low 5-4". I grew an amazing inch from high school . I graduated,at 5-5, weighing 125lbs."

Short vaulters take heart!

I'm 4'11", and I've cleared 10 feet. Look at Kate Soma, she is 5'2", and has jumped over 14. I'm not going to let height keep me from jumping higher!

I went to high school with a kid who was 5' 1" and he cleared 14' 5" as a senior. He was a 101 pound wrestler until his senior year when he wrestled in the 108 division. Very strong and fast for his size. (Jumped on a 14 foot 130 pole.)

One of the funny things I recall is that he once handed off the relay baton (3rd leg) of the 4x100m to a guy who was 6' 7" tall!!!

The best girl vaulter on my team is 4' 11" and cleared 9 feet as a sophomore.

Not exactly world class, but inspirational none the less.
