I'm a short vaulter

Unread postby dakota_vaulter » Tue May 20, 2003 11:49 am

I am only 5 feet 2in and am in the 8th grade. I qualified for state in pole vault this year with the vault of 8ft. I know that might not sound to high for you but I get higher than my friend who is 5 feet 6in. It doesn't really matter how tall you are but the skills you have. :)

That's not gay... they're lucky to have that opportunity! Our junior highers only get a league meet... no pole vault though.

We do not have junior high state meets, I qualified in the varsity division. You only have to get 7ft 9in

Height does matter for a number of reasons. If you're in HS, I hear you get much better looks from colleges (unless you're super fast like that UC guy). This is because the center of gravity is higher one someone who is taller (obviously). So then when inverted, there is more distance between the center of gravity and the top. Another reason is that when the vaulter plants high and jumps high, the initial angle between the runway and the box is best when it is larger.

Greg Duplantis is DEF> my hero any who is that short and can still jump over 19 feet is insane it gives us pole vaulters who are vertically challenged some hope that Height isnt everything! HEy Maybe ill grow some more it would def. be helpful compared to jumpign off the ground from 5'6'' LOL,

it might not be for junior high ... i go to a private school that goes kindergarten through 12th grade, and there are a few middle schoolers on our track team because middle school doesnt have a track team because there arent enough of them that would sign up to make a track team lol ... but yea ... 1 of them went to states this year ... and placed ... and an 8th grader from another school won states in the mile at our meet against high schoolers ... so that might be how he went to states?

Im barely over 5 feet, maybe 5'1" and I weigh just under 90 lbs, and I recently vaulted 10' with a 90lb 11'6" UCS Spirit, however my form looks better than anyone else on my team by a longshot. All of the rest of the guys are like 5'6"-6' and they can get on huge poles (from my perspective, 13' 150's) and vault 11' no problem, so even though I have better form and a good run height really matters. Also, I was wondering if weight matters at all? It seems to me as if it would only be your strength to weight ratio assuming you had the right pole but i was wondering if there were any other factors involved.
