Installing Standard Anchors

Need to order new anchors for our standards but I've never installed them before. Do the anchors come with instructions or is it something very simple to do?

By some 1/2" allthread and corresponding washers and nuts.or what ever dia will fit your standards cut the allthread in 6" lengths. Most concrete slabs should have been poured 6" thick so you do not want to go all the way through the slab b/c then your anchor will rust and crack the slab. So the 6" length gives you 4" into the slab and 2" exposed for the standard washer and nut. You will need a roto hammer to drill the hole in the concrete with a bit 1/16 to 1/8" larger than your allthread. Get some concrete epoxy put enough in the hole so that it starts to ozze out when you put your allthread all the way in the hole--clean off extra epoxy so the standard will sit flat. repeat for all anchor points.

Materials:
4' of allthread
8 washers
8 bolts
concrete epoxy
roto hammer and bit

you can get it all at home depot and rent the roto hammer and bit from them as well

I would use lag shields with lag bolts. That way when you remove the bases you wont have bolts sticking up out of the ground. Our local high school had the bolts sticking up and the grounds crew hit them with a mower so they were rusted and bent. I replaced them with lags and have not had any problems plus no more steel prongs sticking up just off of the football field.

Okay, now would I use that same process if I'm installing the anchors into pavement? The concrete slabs around our setup are too far out. So the standard bases are set up on the black tar pavement.

Not sure what would work best in "black top". Maybe stop and ask a crew installing black top / asphalt (sp) and see what they suggest. I think any kink of expansion "shield" in a soft surface like black top might be suspect. OK my .02

Would bolting the standards onto a sheet of wood that's slid underneath the mats work on anchoring them down?

the standard hieght would be off by the thickness of the wood.

Noted; but I could easily mark the standards so they'd be accurate when we need to place a bar up. I'm just trying to figure out a way to take care of the standards since everywhere I've read wouldn't advise anchoring them into asphalt

How strong is the wood? I would be worried about the wood cracking if a lot of stress was put on the standards, causing them to fail at the most important moment.

That could happen, Becca, but that should suffice for "anchoring" the standards, right?

Last year I anchored our standards to 2x6's and slid them under the pit. It worked great. This year a new surface and new standards means we can host meets and anchor the standards properly in concrete.

Thanks for the idea. At our coaches meeting yesterday we decided we'll try and get a local construction company to rip up the concrete we already have, and pour concrete in the right spot to install the anchors.
