Sayings from around the world

Unread postby flyingfox21 » Sat Jul 23, 2005 3:59 am

This is kinda random, but i was thinkin bout all the different sayings people have, and how different regions have different sayings. people from the bay area (me) say hella, people from the east coast say wicked, and people from the mid west say pop (instead of soda). I was just wondering how many different ones we could come up with, and where each one is from. go have fun with this one :P

I was born in Fresno, and now live in Maryland, and there is ALOT of diffrences in pronunciations. Vaccum is sometimes refered to as the sweeper. What u guys call subs (the sandwhich) is refered to as hoagie in PA and grinders farther up north. Normal people say WATER around here its WUTER. And in Maryland...you can't go a day without Old Bay. Oh, and also, anytime there is an O in anything...we like to stress the O...cause of the Orioles.

Here's a cool map showing all that jazz...
http://www.popvssoda.com/countystats/total-county.html
Seems the St. Louis area (me) is an exception to the midwest=pop statement

Water bubblah is a drinking fountain...right?

People in Illinois call Missouri "MissourUH" not "MissourEE"

Hehe...betcha you guys can't pronounce these roads: Spoede, Gravois, Chouteau...Don't worry, no one but a native St. Louisan can ;) lol

Okay, anyway, more in line with the actual name of this thread "Sayings from around the WORLD"...Here's one from Mexico I think (well, some spanish-speaking country)... "[insert name] is better than bread": Used to describe just an all-around neat person/thing/noun

Lol, for some reason I just knew someone was going to ask me that.

It's a water fountain. you know, the thing that people press a button and water comes out so you can drink from it? lol That thing. it's a water bubbler, damn it!

Everyone up in Maine seems to have the same kind of accent that the Bostonians have then, they can't seem to pronounce their "r's" and seem to say it Ah instead.

I was with a friend from Lowell, MA and he has a major accent compared to me, and he was like "my cah needs a stickah" and i was like "WHOA is that one hell of an accent on you, lol"
