7 weeks till state meet in Missouri!!!

Unread postby Hickman » Tue Apr 06, 2010 11:30 pm

I am a HS senior I have a PR of 13-6 last year and I am hoping for a school record of 15’ or a personal best of 14-6. This is a video my coach put together it is from the Univ. of Missouri, March meet, and practice yesterday.
The pole is 13’ 160lbs, I am on the top and weigh 158lbs. Standers at MU are at 19in. I am at 6 lefts.
I am dogging it both I know and my coach knows I am running slowly, but how is my bottom arm, trail leg, swing. They seem solid but anything I am missing?
I would really like some input on the top end of my swing to inversion, I feel my head and shoulders could relax more and I am still not pull/pushing at the top.
Side note I just got done with a meet tonight and was clean though 13-0 and hit 13-6 on the back side three times, had a tail wind and could not set the standers right. I am excited to get on a 14’ 165lbs or a 13’ and 14’ 170lbs, that we call the “TREES”. Other good pole nickname.
Thanks
N.L.

Clip name is Natelittle2010, there is also a team mate of mine that was from last year when she was a Freshman jumping 10-6. If you have anything for her from the old vids, I can pass it along. I think it is a 120/125lbs 11ft.

Overall you have excellent technique. You definitely need to run faster. Aside from speed, your #1 problem is you don't keep your trail leg straight ( can have a slight knee bend, but it should feel straight to you ) throughout your entire swing. If you keep your trail leg straight through the entire swing ( until your feet pass the pole ) your hips end up above your shoulders and you'll be in perfect position to easily invert and fly off the pole vertically instead of "flagging" out.

When you let the trail leg knee bend during the swing, you stop loading the pole and the pole starts to recoil before you have finished the swing.

When you fix it, you'll feel like you're about to do a back roll right off the pole. Plus, you'll be crushing that pole then too. You're next pole should be a 13' 6" 160 or 165. A 14' pole is too much length to adjust to off a 13' pole.
