I moved the standards back and...

Unread postby Thats.What.She.Said » Fri Apr 17, 2009 7:33 pm

I PRed by 5 inches, and got the school record by 2 inches. My dad didnt make it there until right before my second attemp at 9'6. But I went in at 8'. 9'8 was to beat the school record, 9'10 was just sort of random. So yeah, suggestions?

You'll get ANOTHER 5" easily if you fix your run/carry... I can't tell specifics on how your hands are in relation to your body because the camera is too far away/not at a good angle for that, but what I do notice is the pole angle. It's far too low! Keep the tip UP, you'll run faster and plant better!

Awesome job!!

You still have plenty of technical things to keep improving on, so keep listening to your coaches about that stuff :)

You're not bending the pole much but you are starting to get a lot of pole speed. If you have the standards at 70-80 and are knocking the bar off on the way up, start raising your grip 1" at a time.

Keep improving your run and takeoff and you'll be on bigger poles in no time :)

PP - Cool. Yeah its hard to get a good angle since it's my dad that's filming for me, so he is supposed to stay outside the track. Hmm really? Well I have some free time this week since its spring break, so i can try that. Its a slightly shorter pole, but does this help? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nn8VDPDq ... annel_page But hey my run now is a ton better than it was last year, I just gotta keep pregressing!

Becca - Thanks! Yeah i definitly do, I gat to actually be coached tomorrow! Since I'm making a trip to see vaultingus. But I'll try moving my grip up a bit at a time, every time I have tried going up from where i am now though, my plant has also improved causing me to like crush the pole and my form to go downhill. But yeah I really want to get on bigger poles :D

There's no magic in the pole vault, but when done correctly, parts of the Petrov model feel like that! ;)

now i just gotta learn patience to feel all the magic that Petrov has to offer. I spent all last summer learning to hold the take off long as opposed to going right to my back (a habbit brought on by the guys' coach here, that tried to offer helpful advice, and actually told me to do it. i knew it was bad but i also didnt have enought experience with it to know when i was doing it, so it just didnt help that if he saw it, he wouldnt say anything). and not i need patience in my swing cause i have gotten the tendancy to pull out of it wicked early, just ride the pole a bit, and then shoot out at the bar. it was horrible saturday http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8lm0rOl ... annel_page i know that wasnt my only problem of the day, but that video definitly displays it well.

Ask your coaches about staying tall throughout your take off. Your hands get slammed backwards when you leave the ground. Keeping your bottom hand moving up along with your top hand would solve this. Now this won't come into play until you are holding a little higher, but when you do hold a little higher, think about keeping pressure on the pole with BOTH hands and you might find the bend and swing a lot more smooth. Your top hand shouldn't come more than about 6 inches behind your head. Although i'm not sure what path your coaches are having you take in your progression to higher grips, its just something to keep in mind!
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph

well vaultingus is one of my coaches, so doug if you read this, feel free to chime in.
But right now my main problem is, is that im on my own most of the time, i mean i can ask my teammates to help my look for simple things, but they dont really know what they're looking for. i have definitly been trying to improve my hands at take off though. what do you mean by "Keeping your bottom hand moving up along with your top hand would solve this?"
