Pole climbing drill
Pole climbing drill
Does anyone have or know of any video footage of Botcharnikov’s pole climbing drill, as described in the appendices of BTB2, being executed expertly? Or at least properly? I'm having trouble picturing what it should look like when done perfectly.
If so, please post!

I have been hoping to run across video of this drill, because I've tried it and it seems like I need a visual aid... Maybe I could bring a camera to SRU and have a coached demonstration filmed with agapit and then I could post it up here? Maybe? Thoughts?

Re: pole climb
I believe the prescribed length is either 6 or 8 steps, but by all means please post whatever you have as it could still be of help.ladyvolspvcoach wrote:are you talking about the 2 step or 6 step pole climbing drill? I have a video of the two step drill..
Sounds like a plan!powerplant42 wrote:I have been hoping to run across video of this drill, because I've tried it and it seems like I need a visual aid... Maybe I could bring a camera to SRU and have a coached demonstration filmed with agapit and then I could post it up here? Maybe? Thoughts?
Does nobody else have any footage of this drill...?
Pole Climbing...
I use it since seeing LoJo doing it and then figuring it out.
In order to be able to do it you must:
Stay behind the pole
Jump up on TO
Have your top hand high on TO
Have control of the body as it rises with the pole to vertical
Be holding high enough to ensure a slowing down of the pole rotation as it goes thru vertical.
With these things in place then the competition starts as to getting to the top of a 5.20 pole.....First.
Clinics each week at the building in OC! DVD's for sale also. Just email me.

pole climb - our try
I have come across this exercise some weeks ago when finishing BTB2.
Useful or not, it changes the routine.
The best we have got so far is the following:

In the list of videos click on pole climb
Can anybody tell me where we can improve.
This is with a 5 m pole on 3 lefts.

pole climb
That's the one. There is a direct correlation to this drill and the take off point for the long run for that particular day.......
CONNEXE, that's exactly what I was looking for--thanks! I wanted to see how and when you swing to the pole. That looks like a 4m-ish grip, no? Pretty good from 6 steps.
Did anyone ever happen to tape Lojo doing this? I wouldn't mind seeing a true pro does it, especially seeing as how his coach invented it.

three step
The really cool thing about this drill, is that when you move up the pole to a max grip doing this drill. Grap that grip and put the pole tip in the box. Then lay the pole down still holding that grip. Where the top of your hand hits the runway will be your take off spot for that day..........during long runs...
Re: three step
Yes, you are perfectly right.
I have seen this comment before. Was it Petrov?
In our case a slightly higher grip would have been necessary to slow down a little bit for being able to get to the end of a 520 pole (which we don't have). This grip is very close to his actual competition take-off .

Re: Pole climbing drill
When I saw LoJo do this I never saw him climb hand over hand. He kept his hands together and was really explosive as he jerked himself up the pole. If he did go hand over hand it was at the very end after 2-3 major pulls with his hands close together. He would probably cover 2'+ per pull. Bubba
